U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown
Black History
Month
This month we celebrated the final Black History Month of Barack
Obama’s historic presidency. President Obama’s accomplishments — not
just his election — are for the history books.
Just think about how far our nation has come under our first
African-American president. We have climbed out of the depths of
recession, and created 14 million new jobs. We rescued the American
auto industry and now it’s roaring back to life. We passed the
Affordable Care Act, giving 600,000 Ohioans health coverage, many for
the first time in their lives. And we permanently expanded the Earned
Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, which lifts hundreds of
thousands of families out of poverty.
Of course, we know that our work is not yet finished.
The refusal of Republican Senators to even consider President Obama’s
Supreme Court nominee, is just one more disgraceful attempt to
delegitimize our democratically-elected President. This is politics at
its worst, and it has to stop.
Too many hardworking Americans are still struggling, and too many face
barriers solely because of the color of their skin.
We need to reform our criminal justice system and to continue taking
steps to rebuild trust and accountability between police officers and
the communities they serve. We need to defend and expand that most
sacred of rights — the right to vote — and we need to do more to ensure
that all children born in this country have the opportunity to fulfill
their God-given potential.
But because of what this president has accomplished — with the help of
so many committed activists — the arc of history is bending a bit
further toward justice and the story of Black History Month has a new
chapter.
