The Brexit Vote
By Heather Lee
The historical vote took place on June 23rd and Britain voted to leave
the European Union. Brexit mirrored the state of many economies all
over the world, the U.S. included. People are frustrated with the
status quo in politics. The reasons that the Brits’ voted to leave the
EU are almost identical to the reasons people are supporting Donald
Trump.
The Brexit campaign has similarities with Trump’s campaign. I can’t
remember the amount of times I have heard Trump being compared to
Hitler. The same was happening during the Brexit campaign. The
sometimes violent clashes at Trump rallies can be compared to the
extremism believed to be behind the murder of Jo Cox in front of her
own home. She was a member of parliament and a supporter of staying in
the EU. The man stated in court “My name is death to traitors’, freedom
for Britain.”
Donald Trump has based his campaign around the frustrations and fears
of working class Americans’. The people in this country are fed up.
Much of the same is happening around the world. People want change. The
problem is that the people don’t really know what to do make a change
happen. The Brits’ are fed up, but what can they really do to shake
their government up? They voted for Brexit to pass.
What can the US do to make change? Donald Trump will be elected
President in November. The day after Brexit passed it was the number
one searched topic in the UK. So many Brits’ don’t understand what it
was really about or what effects it would have on their economy.
They made a change, but was it a good one or a bad one? I don’t think
Trump supporters understand what he is really about. Maybe they do
understand, they just don’t care and are willing to go to extreme
measures to shake the government up. People being disillusioned with
their government is at an all-time high in countries across the world
and it isn’t difficult to capitalize off of that.
