State leaders
urge schools to help fight drug abuse
7/7/2016
State officials including Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor,
Attorney General Mike DeWine and Ohio legislative leaders recently sent
letters to all school superintendents in Ohio to share tools and
information with teachers, counselors and parents in an effort to fight
the deadly opioid epidemic.
Among other things, the letter offers information about the Start
Talking! initiative which encourages parents, teachers, peers and
mentors to talk to students about drug abuse and the risks associated
with those activities. "By having a conversation with young people
about the dangerous consequences of trying drugs," the letter states,
"studies show that we can reduce the likelihood of kids starting down a
path to drug addiction by 50 percent."
The letter also GenRx.pngprovided information about GenerationRx, a
partnership between the Ohio State University and Cardinal Health
Foundation, which provides educators a toolkit of resources to teach
kids about the dangers of prescription drugs.
"This is a fight Ohio cannot afford to lose and only with your help can
we have any hope of victory," the state leaders concluded.
