Brexit…
Similarities to the U.S.?
By Savannah Hill
There are many remarkable parallels between the Brexit vote and our
current presidential race. The Brexit is a referendum that will allow
Britain to formally exit the European Union. A majority of Americans
are completely unaware of Britain’s plan about leaving the European
Union, but Americans should pay attention and understand, as it is
motivated by the same emotions that have fueled our presidential
nominee Donald Trump in our own political system. A recent tweet from
Trump “They took their country back, just like we will take America
back” holds this to be true.
One similarity between Trump and Brexit is their feelings on
immigration and how they believe it is out of control. In the days
leading up to the Brexit the European Union allowed a massive amount of
migration into Britain. According to the voters this completely altered
the identity of Britain in a negative way. This is very similar to
Trump’s slogan to “Make America great again,” which is Trump’s way of
saying America was great but now it’s not because of who we let into
our country. Another similarity between the Britain and the U.S. is
they both believe that Political leaders and institutions are clueless
and corrupt. The people of Britain didn’t take well to being governed
by a nameless and faceless person in Brussels. Trump also puts distrust
for politicians at the heart of his campaign. Britons and Americans now
have a large distrust for politicians who promise to know what’s best
for them.
In my opinion these are some very good similarities between the Brexit
and our presidential campaign. I believe their vote is based on
information of which we should all be aware.
