County gets
clean audit, 2016 looking good so far
June marks the halfway point of the year. 2016 has been pretty good to
Darke County so far and we hope to continue the fortune into the second
half of the year. We have had some weather issues with a few bad
storms, but we seem to have come through them with little, or minimal,
damage. The weather is getting warmer, and that leads to sudden storms,
so keep an eye on the weather and be as prepared as possible for high
winds and brief torrential rains. Let’s hope they will be kept to a
minimum the rest of the year.
June is the month where we typically have our mid-year budget reviews
with our department heads. This process gives us the opportunity to
gauge what the needs will be for next year. Our department heads are
holding the line as much as possible as they always do, but they have
no control over things like insurance, and worker’s comp. We have been
fortunate the last few years in that our insurance, both individual and
property and liability, have seen very minor increases compared to
other counties. Our “Health and Wellness” initiatives are proving to be
a real cost savings, as is having our property and liability insurance
provider CORSA (County Risk Sharing Authority) issued through the
County Commissioner’s Association (CCAO) inspect county property and
make recommendations on lowering our premium. We will continue to do
all we can to keep our costs to the public as low as possible.
In other happenings, On Monday June, 20th, the Auditor and the
Commissioners met with our State Auditors, Julian and Grube, to discuss
our recent county audit. Darke County once again came through with a
clean audit. Thanks to everyone in making sure the county is doing its
business with the people’s money properly. June 22nd found the County
Commissioners meeting with the Airport Advisory board for a general
meeting on the Airport. Things are progressing well at the airport, and
future events for Darke County are being planned. We are working
closely with the F.A.A. to make further improvements in safety and user
friendliness. The airport is going to become more and more important as
companies expand, and other events such as Eldora and their races, need
to use the airport for business. We are also seeing an increase in
people wanting to fly for pleasure again, and that will definitely add
to the airport’s importance. The parade season is in full swing as well
for the Commissioners and Elected Officials and our next big parades
are at Ansonia on July 2nd at 11:00 a.m. and New Madison on July 4th at
2:30 p.m. Let’s have good turnouts for both of them!
Monday, July 4th we will be closed for the holiday celebration. Other
than that, we are open every Monday and Wednesday for our public
sessions. Join us, at 1:30 p.m., in the Commissioner’s Office, 520
South Broadway, next to the Courthouse at that time. Hope to see you
there!
