U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown
Memorial Day
At the end of the Civil War, Union veterans came together to establish
“Decoration Day,” to honor the bravery and preserve the memory of
fallen soldiers. Today, we mark this observance with Memorial Day to
remember all Americans — from the War of 1812 to the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan — who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. It is
our duty to honor them, on this day and every day, by keeping their
stories and memories alive.
While we take this time to remember the heroism of our fallen
servicemembers, we must also continue to support their families. The
best way to repay the debt we owe to those who died in defense of our
freedoms is to keep our promise to care for their loved ones. I am
committed to fighting to ensure that spouses, children, and other
family members receive the benefits and assistance their families have
earned.
The Library of Congress continues to seek submissions for its Veterans
History Project. This project will collect, preserve, and present the
stories of American veterans for future generations. As we observe
Memorial Day together, you may visit the project’s website here if you
would like to learn more about the project.
As the first Ohio Senator to serve a full term on the Senate Committee
on Veterans’ Affairs, I am committed to ensuring that Ohio’s military
members and veterans receive the services and respect they deserve. If
you are a veteran or family member in need of assistance, click here
for more information about how Sen. Brown’s office can assist you.
