Understanding
Each Child, Our Future: Core Principles
12/17/2018
Each Child, Our Future is Ohio’s five-year strategic plan to ensure
each student enjoys a bright future thanks to an excellent preK-12
education experience. More than 150 Ohio-based partners helped develop
Each Child, Our Future, along with feedback from 1,200 Ohio parents,
caregivers, preK-12 and postsecondary educators, employers, business
leaders, community members, state legislators and students. This is the
third in an 11-part series of shorts that walks EdConnection readers
through the plan. Last week’s installment touched on components of the
plan and explained its focus on supporting the whole — physical,
social, emotional and intellectual — child. This week’s article covers
the three core principals, vision and one goal on pages 8-10 of the
plan, which can be found in its entirety by clicking here.
Core Principles
Three fundamental principles lay the foundation for Each Child, Our
Future.
EQUITY: Equity in education means each child has access to relevant,
challenging academic experiences and educational resources needed for
success, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, language, disability,
family background or income. Each Child, Our Future renews Ohio’s
commitment to creating learning conditions that ensure each child
acquires knowledge and skills across four equal learning domains, or
areas: Foundational Knowledge and Skills; Well-rounded Content
(subjects and disciplines); Leadership and Reasoning; and
Social-Emotional Learning.
PARTNERSHIPS: Everyone — schools, families, communities and our state —
shares the responsibility of preparing children for successful futures.
The most important partners are parents and caregivers, who have the
greatest impact on their children’s development. Other indispensable
partners include educators, higher education institutions, businesses,
philanthropy, employers, libraries, social service organizations,
community members, health care providers, behavioral health experts and
many more. Put simply, partnerships transform the education experience.
QUALITY SCHOOLS: All schools — public and private — play important
roles in building Ohio’s future. Quality schools are important
destinations where many individuals and factors converge to serve each
student. These include school leaders, teachers, parents and
caregivers, curriculum, instruction, student supports and analysis of
student data. Research shows that school leaders have the greatest hand
in defining a school’s culture and climate, which significantly affect
student learning.
Pursuing educational equity, partnerships and quality schools, we can
offer every Ohio child a promising future.
