All the right
moves
By Bob Robinson
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing the best Annie Oakley Festival
I’ve seen in years. After struggling with a huge fairgrounds that,
while well attended, didn’t seem so due to the spread out space; after
moving to York Woods and picking up speed, only to find out it was
necessary to move again…
The Festival hit a home run at the south end of the Darke County
Fairgrounds.
First, I’d like to express my congratulations to Morgan Hissong, Miss
Annie Oakley 2018. The Franklin Monroe student acknowledges following
Annie Oakley’s entreaty to all girls to shoot for the bullseye no
matter how many times it takes; this was her fourth time around.
“Remember when I asked you if you were going to win?” She nods. “What
did you say?”
“I’ll try,” she said.
“What was my response to that?”
“Tell myself I’m going to win,” she said.
“And…” Hissong grinned. She got it done! Congratulations!
In the meantime, there was a lot of activity throughout the area.
Granddaughter Bella, after consenting to have her photo taken with Miss
Annie Oakley, was anxious to get to the horses. She said she smelled
them. It was the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association.
Not sure how they managed it, but the contestants popped balloons with
six shooters while barrel racing for time on their horses. I’d have had
a tough time getting the balloons with no horses.
Reminiscent of fair days, people were wandering in the aisles, looking
at vendor offerings, eating ice cream, sandwiches, pizzas, popcorn…
whatever.
There were multiple entries in the car show; Spittin’ Image entertained
its usual large crowd; the Ohio Western Showcase was back with its whip
demonstrations; Historical Bus Tours were full more often than not;
Fast Draw Competition generated lots of interest, kiddie tractor pulls
and more… then…
Weiner Dog Races! What a concept! We had to stay around for that
(despite my legs starting to give out)… it was a hoot.
And hundreds of Festival visitors agreed. At 2:30 in the afternoon,
last day of the festival, the area was packed!
My congratulations to the festival committee for 2018… they made all
the right moves!
