E-Cigs Target
Teens… Nicotine University
E-cigarette sellers are offering scholarships to teens who write essays
on topics such as whether a smokeless society can exist or which
e-cigarette they'd recommend to others.
This is a shameless marketing ploy to attract and addict a new
generation of nicotine users. These companies say they're only helping
current smokers switch to smokeless nicotine, but it's having the
opposite effect on teens.
Teens overwhelmingly prefer e-cigarettes, with 16% of high school
seniors using them within the past month. Once they start using
e-cigarettes, many will switch to smoking cigarettes. In fact, one
researcher's model estimates that 2,070 smokers quit with the help of
vaping while 168,000 teens and young adults started smoking regular
cigarettes after vaping.
These companies are only profitable because thousands of teens get
addicted to their products each year. They know that. That's why
they're advertising to teens on the Internet, on television, on social
media sites, and, now, during the college application process.
