Ramblings of an Old Man
Act of
kindness. Pass it on.
By Bob Robinson
At a local restaurant not too long ago, an incredible thing happened.
Something you see too seldom these days…
There was a whole group of us waiting to be seated… including Katie, a
former intern of mine, and her family. A long time ago intern. Hadn’t
seen her in years, almost a decade, then all of a sudden we started
running into each other at the store. And now at the restaurant.
She and her family, hubby and five – count them… five – kids, were
waiting patiently for a table. While we were talking, I noticed a woman
watching the kids. She was watching as they eyed some stuffed animals
in a big bucket. They were on sale… two for six dollars.
After a couple of moments she came up to Katie and whispered something
to her.
“Would I be insulted? No, of course not!” Katie said, surprised. “But
you really don’t have to do that.” She seemed at a loss for words,
something I don’t ever remember about her as an intern.
The next thing I knew, the woman was leading the kids over to the
barrel to pick out their stuffed toy. The littlest one, who had been in
her daddy’s arms, came up in the rear… “Me too?” she asked. “Yes, you
too, sweetheart,” the woman responded.
Katie thanked the woman repeatedly, but was repeatedly told she saw the
kids looking… it was just something she wanted to do. She refused to
give her name.
“Not important,” she said.
I requested the photos Katie took. When she sent them to me, she said,
“My kids love their stuffed friends so much… we will never forget her
kindness!”
“We were so surprised by her generosity,” she added later. “And my kids
are still playing with their new toys. This type of random
kindness doesn’t happen a lot, and it’s a day my kids soon won’t
forget. I hope they grow up to be as kind, sweet and selfless as
her one day!”
By the way… the woman purchased six toys (Two for six dollars,
remember? For five kids?).
“Just curious,” I asked the woman. “What are your plans for the sixth
toy?”
She smiled and said, “I’ll figure something out.” Then she left to find
her companion who had already been seated.
When my group was seated, I noticed a little girl at a table a few feet
from ours. She looked to be about 10 or 11 months old.
She was cuddling a stuffed toy.
