Along Life’s Way
Sizing It Up: A Christmas Fable
By Lois E. Wilson
In the forest wilderness, there lived two young monkeys, Lucky and
Morey. They were good friends. They had been given their nicknames
because of the way they acted. Lucky was easy-going and appreciated
everything he had or was given. The other monkey was known as Morey as
his friends noticed that he was never satisfied with what he had. He
always wanted More! More! More!
Christmas was approaching and Morey had a scheme which he knew would be
sure to increase the amount of presents that Santa left him. He thought
it was foolproof; this year he would get more presents than any other
monkey. He was planning to find and hang the largest sock possible on
the monkeys’ sock tree. Of course, he would put his name on it in big
letters so all knew whose sock it was.
He began thinking of which animals had large feet. He knew he could not
ask a lion or tiger for a sock. They had bigger feet than he did, but
it would be too dangerous. He crossed animal after animal off his list
of possible sources. At last he found the perfect animal—tame enough,
and it had four large round feet. He thought his choice was ingenious.
He set out immediately to borrow a sock from a friendly elephant he
knew.
At the North Pole, Santa’s Christmas preparations were nearly
completed. He complimented the elves on the excellent shoes they had
made for all the wilderness animals. Santa had been concerned for he
was aware that a very dry, hot year had passed, and the animals had
suffered many problems with their feet.
The elves questioned Santa about how he could be certain to leave the
right size shoes for each animal. Santa replied, “That will be simple.
Each type of animal has its own tree to hang socks upon; if it’s the
lions’ tree, I’ll know to leave four shoes for each lion. I can tell
the size to leave by the size of each sock hanging on the tree.” The
elves nodded their approval and helped Santa finish loading his sleigh.
Christmas morning, Lucky was proudly wearing his new shoes. Morey was
wearing a new hat. Lucky asked him, “Didn’t you get new shoes like the
rest of the monkeys?”
Morey answered, “No, I don’t know what happened. All I got were round hats like this one. They are too big to be shoes!”
Moral: If you are feeling a bit greedy, be sure you don’t bite off more than you can “shoe.”
