Our Thoughts... Your Voice Matters
Summer has ended, fall has begun, and the General Assembly has
reconvened. As hearings are scheduled for proposed legislation, it’s
important that we make sure our voices are heard. This means calling
your legislator, sending an email, and, for those who can, testifying
before a committee. If you are concerned about speaking directly to
staff, please note that leaving a voicemail with the office after hours
is also a great way to make your voice heard and is a good way of
circumventing the fear of talking directly to staff.
Currently, Prevention Action Alliance is tracking 47 bills from both
the house and senate and we expect that number to gradually rise as new
pieces of legislation continue to get introduced. These bills touch on
subjects of vital importance to prevention. They seek to legalize
sports gambling in Ohio, enact health standards in our schools, create
an office of drug policy, and regulate e-cigarettes, among other
topics. Below, in no particular order, we have listed 10 bills that we
are watching closely.
HB 10 | Drug Policy Office: To establish the Governor's Office of Drug Policy and to make an appropriation.
HB 12 | Behavioral Health: To create the Ohio Children's Behavioral Health Prevention Network Stakeholder Group
HB 165 / SB 121 | Health Standards: Adoption of health education standards
HB 194 | Sports Gaming: To create a Sports Gaming Advisory Board,
to legalize and regulate sports gaming in this state, and to levy a tax
on businesses that provide sports gaming.
HB 315 | Suicide Prevention: To require federally licensed firearms
dealers to provide suicide prevention information to the purchaser of a
firearm.
HB 346 | Flavored Vaping: To prohibit the sale of flavored electronic
smoking devices and flavored vapor products and to establish a
committee to study the health risks associated with such products.
HB 347 | Vaping Products: To place restrictions on retailers of vapor products.
SB 3 | Drug Sentencing: To express the intent of the General Assembly
to develop and enact legislation to reform Ohio's drug sentencing laws.
SB 51 | Drug Prescribing: Establish non-opioid directives; coverage of non-opioid therapy.
SB 111| Sports Wagering: To permit the Ohio Casino Control Commission
to regulate sports wagering and to levy a tax on businesses that
provide sports wagering.
