A FRIENDLY CONVERSATION
By Hope Louise Edwards Wills

Two robins sat up in a tree
Gossiping about what they did see.
Ruby Robin said,” There’s Cora Cow in the pasture green
Making eyes at Bruno Bull who is so mean.
Rosy Robin said, “Did you know that Gary Goat gets to ride on the 4th of July float
And to all the other animals he will surely gloat?”
Ruby Robin said, “I hadn’t heard that,
But he’s always been quite a brat.”
Rosy Robin said, “Clara Cat saw Harry Hound,
He wasn’t doing much, just lying around.”
Ruby Robin said, “I have met Roger Rooster,”
Henrietta Hen had introduced her.
Rosy Robin said, “I’ve heard that he is here.
He’s quite popular it would appear.”
Ruby Robin said, “The corn is doing well this year.”
Rosy Robin said, “Yes, but it needs rain, my dear.”
Ruby Robin said, “The lambs are very lively today.
Isn’t it enjoyable to watch them play?
The little black one jumps so high.
Isn’t he wonderful? My, oh my.”
Rosy Robin said, “Sadie Sheep is so content,
Those twins were such a happy event.
She named them Lucy and Lenny, you know.
I heard from Paula Pig that it is so.”
Ruby Robin said, “How is Paula Pig by the way?
Do you see her everyday?”
Rosy Robin said, “No Ruby, I don’t see her quite that much,
But now I have to fly and get the children’s lunch.”

ANOTHER CONVERSATION
By Hope Louise Edwards Wills

Rosy and Ruby are the robins you have met,
And their friendly conversation is not done yet.
Ruby said, “It’s been a while, Rosy, since we got together.
It’s rained so much lately, I don’t care for damp weather.”
Rosy said, “Yes, in damp weather my wings tend to ache,
That always seems to keep me awake.”
Ruby said, “Well, it’s nice and warm today,
Let’s enjoy the heat, what do you say?”
Rosy said, “Have you seen Paula Pig? She’s on a diet.
It’s a vitamin drink. She says she’ll try it.”
Ruby said, “You know how Paula loves her veggie stews.
How much does she want to lose?”
Rosy said, “I don’t know, she didn’t say.
Buttered biscuits will be her downfall anyway.”
Ruby said, “Barny and Betty Blue Jay are moving in next door.
His loud voice will be hard to ignore.”
Rosy said, “Yes, he can get hopping mad
And his temper is always bad.”
Ruby said, “Have you met Henrietta Hen yet, they do say
That she has taken over and is here to stay.”
Rosy said, “Yes, I’ve met her and I like her, too.
Just don’t tell others that I do.”
Ruby said, “Oh, I won’t say a word or the feathers will fly.
I hope they all get along by and by.”
Rosy said, “Harry Hound said the farmhouse is a buzzin’
The farmer is getting a visit from his city cousin.”
Ruby said, “It has gotten cloudy and will soon storm.
Let’s go home where we’ll be warm.”
Rosy said, “Yes, Ruby, I‘ll see you soon.
How about tomorrow afternoon?”

BARNEY’S TEMPER
By Hope Louise Edwards Wills

Barney Blue Jay was having a fit,
His temper was well lit.
Betty, his mate, said, “Hush now Barney,
I don’t want our neighbors disturbed by you!”
Barney said, “Well boo, hoo, hoo,
This dinner is not fit to eat.”
Then he proceeded to stomp his feet.
The worms were few, the berries sour,
So he ranted and raved for at least an hour.
His neighbors, the robins, the sparrows and the doves,
All learned to treat him with kid gloves.
No one wanted to face his wrath,
If they happened to cross his path.
He was always loudly debatin’
Everything without hesitatin’
Betty was at the end of her rope.
To get him to shut up, there was no hope.
Temper tantrums and shrieks are quite common from a Blue Jay,
Or so the bird experts say.
Barney has now become the neighborhood entertainment,
Crowds gather just to watch him vent.

BENNY BUNNY MEETS NEW FRIENDS
By Hope Louise Edwards Wills

Benny Bunny hopped around on a beautiful spring day.
He’d come a long way when he came out to play.
He was a scared little bunny and didn’t know what to do.
Then along came Harry Hound, Pom (the pup) and Tom turkey, too.
“Well, well,” said Harry hound, “What do we have here?
A little lost bunny, it would appear.”
“Yes, Mr. Hound, my n-n-n-name is Benny B-B-B-Bunny.
And I s-s-s-stutter and most everyone l-l-l-laughs and thinks it’s f-f-f-funny.”
“Well, don’t you worry about that,” said Pom,
“I’ll be your friend and so will my turkey Buddy, Tom.”
Harry Hound said, “Now I will take you to Paula Pig for something to eat.
Her veggie stew and biscuits can’t be beat.”
Benny Bunny said, “Oh, I l-l-l-love vegetables, lettuce and peas and c-c-c-carrots
So s-s-s-sweet, I r-r-r-really am hungry. I l-l-l-love to eat”
So they hurried off and found Paula stirring her stew.
Paula said, “I see that I have a few hungry friends at my door.
Well, come and eat there is stew, biscuits and more.
But a new face I do see.
Who are you little on? Who could you be?”
Benny Bunny said, “Miss Paula, my n-n-n-name is B-B-B-Benny Bunny,
And I’m s-s-s-sorry that I t-t-t-talk so funny.”
“Oh,” said Henrietta Hen walking up to the crowd,
“Don’t worry about the way you talk, hold your head up proud.
We are all friends and our quirks are many
And you will fit in with us just fine, little bunny, Benny.”
Later Benny Bunny said, “Thank y-y-y-you all and if Mr. Hound w-w-w-will show me the w-w-w-way,
I h-h-h-have to go h-h-h-home, but I’ll c-c-c-c-come back another d-d-d-day.

IT’S SPRING
By Hope Louise Edwards Wills

Harry Hound was out roaming around,
But no one else could be found.
He wondered where everyone was today,
Even Pom (the pup) wasn’t at his play.
And where was Henrietta Hen? She never missed a chance to fuss or fume.
Something must be up he did assume.
Gary Goat wasn’t at the trashcan but his half eaten breakfast was in view.
There was a piece of cornbread and a boiled potato or two.
Harry Hound thought he surely would fine Paula Pig when he
Stopped by her sty but that wasn’t to be.
But then he looked out in the field only to discover
They were all up on the hill talking to each other.
There was Henrietta, Pom, Gary, Paula and even Tom Turkey.
And there sat Rosy and Ruby (the robins) in their favorite tree.
Rosy and Ruby said Barney and Betty Blue Jay were on their way.
Everyone shouted with glee. “It’s a great spring day.”
It’s oh so wonderful thought Harry Hound, to have all our friends so near
As he shed a sentimental tear.
