RUNNING
AWAY
By
Delbert Blickenstaff
Last
week I did a really dumb thing. Here’s
what happened. I
really like Mrs.
Gilbert, my second grade teacher at school.
Last week she got sick and we had a
stubsetute – that doesn’t look right
– maybe it’s substitute teacher. I
decided right away that I didn’t like her because she’s not like Mrs.
Gilbert. She
didn’t know where anything
was. So I decided
on Wednesday that I
would not go to school.
Mom
watches me all the time so I knew it would be impossible to fool her. I stuffed some extra
clothes in my back pack
and decided to run away from home for a few days.
I know now that it was a dumb thing to
do but
at the time that’s the only way I could think of to get out of going to
school. Mom would
never let me stay at
home.
So
instead of walking with my friends to school I walked to Grandpa’s
house. Grandpa and
Grandma live only a few blocks
from the school. Of
course as soon as I
walked in the front door Grandma went to the kitchen and called Mom so
she
would know where I was and that I was OK.
I
told
Grandpa why I ran away from home and he seemed to understand. Instead of scolding me he
asked me to think
of a way that I could help the new teacher.
I had never thought that she needed help. But then I remembered that
she didn’t know
where the chalk, erasers, and papers were kept.
So I told Grandpa that I could offer to
get the things that she needed
for class. Grandpa
said that was a good
idea.
So
I did
go to school that day, although I was a little late.
I walked right up to the teacher’s desk
and
said “Miss Brewer, I’m sorry that I’m late but I will make up for it by
finding
whatever you need in the room for your class.”
She said “Thank you.”
Then I sat
at my regular desk and I noticed that the other kids were smiling.
I
was
smiling too inside because Grandpa had helped me get over a problem in
a
positive way. Of
course I had to explain
the whole story to Mom and Dad at supper time.
But they didn’t get mad.
They
said that I should come to them and talk over any problem I wanted to. I guess I learned a good
lesson that day.
