Musings of a Senior Scribe
For Granted??
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!!! The human body is 96% oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and
nitrogen...a lot of this is in the form of water. The remaining 4% are
macro/micro nutrients which build bones & cell structures, regulate
the body's pH level, and other duties.
The natural pacemaker of the heart is the sinoatrial node. It sends the
electrical impulse to both side of the heart, telling it to contract
together - in just 4 seconds! There's a natural delay to allow the
contraction and the ventricals to fill with blood. The next beat sends
the blood on it's way to the body and accepts the returning blood. A
sneeze stops this process entirely. That's why we say "God bless you"
when someone sneezes - the heart could have not restarted itself.
With spring in the air and new life appearing - I thought I'd make this
column a fun filled one. I wondered what happened, exactly, in my chest
when I thought of warm weather, boating on Indian Lake, campfires,
fishing in a lazy stream, Muncie Dragway racing, and the like. The way
my heart can hammer - I'm not sure I get the 4 second delay.
Enjoy the spring season and the following tips. The play dough works
well with the older kiddies, too. Traditional Playdough 1 cup
warm water/ 1 cup white flour/ 2 t. cream of tartar/ 1 t cooking oil/
any color food coloring. Mix all ingredients together in a saucepan
over medium heat. Stir constantly until smooth. Remove from heat, add
food coloring and knead until color is blended smoothly - like mixing a
meatloaf. Store in an air tight container.
For you fellow rose lovers out there - April is the time to prune. When
leaf buds appear - it's safe. The first feeding is done at this time,
too. Any all purpose fertilizer will suffice. Many "old pros" swear by
a handful of Epsom salts. - 1/4 to 1/2 cup. It's something to do with
the magnesium. If you have roses in pots like I do, and move them
indoors for the winter (if conditions are right, they will bloom in
December or January), I'd use a 1/16th to 1/8th of a cup. depending on
pot size - sprinkle on the top of the soil (indoors or outdoors) and
water.
Weed Haters - this ones for you! I'm a naturalist - an environmentalist
- so I'm for any way that is minus the chemicals. In a 2 gallon bucket
(this leaves me room for error), mix 1 gallon of apple cider vinegar,1
cup of table salt, and 1 T of dishwashing liquid (I'm a Dawn freak).
Mix until salt is dissolved. Pour on cracks in sidewalks or between
stones/bricks in a walkway. Do not spray on plants you want to keep or
soil you plan to use for gardening later. More time consuming, but the
gentlest way, is to boil plain water. Douse the weeds with the boiling
water once a week until they're gone. Doing this in the spring before
they sprout, kills the buggers before they start.
And lastly - Good bye to George Jones. Hospitalized 4/18/2013 with a
fever and erratic blood pressure, he died 4/26/2013. He was 81. With
hits such as "White Lightning" (1959), "She Thinks I Still Care"
(1962), "Walk Through This World With Me" (1967), "He Stopped Loving
Her Today" (1980) and "I Always Get Lucky With You" (1983) to his
credit - he is one of my personal favorites. He possessed a 3 octave
vocal range and a "will" to keep going despite the personal loss,
trial, and trouble. RIP, George. I'll always remember you and Hickory
Hills.
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Be good the the furry and
feathered ones out there.Be safe and healthy. see ya next time. Ever
Toodles!! MONA
