What a Wonderful World
By Mona Lease
Hi,
all!! The ending of the Great Darke County
Fair has always been the "unofficial end" to summer. As a kid, I
remember making bean bags with my cousins - old sheets cut into little
squares,
stuffed with Navy Beans (dried ones), and sewn shut. We'd stack washed
out soup
cans partially filled with stones and practice knocking them over -
"The
Fair was coming." We used to practice target shooting with the old
pump-up
air rifles. They shot out little metal discs roughly the size of a
dime. Later
the discs were made of plastic and eventually it was all outlawed. The
idea
here was to be ready to walk up to any booth, do your best, and walk
away with
a small prize at the least. We knew the idea of bending a gun sight to
make it
not shoot straightly existed - we saw it on Andy Griffith. But, those
coming to
our Fair would not do that - would they???
As
another Fair ends today and school
starts Monday - I thought I'd leave you
with the immortal words
of Satchmo - better known as Louis Armstrong.
I
see trees of green - red roses, too - I see
'em bloom - for me and for you. And I think to myself - what a
wonderful world.
I see skies of blue and clouds of white - bright blessed days - dark
sacred
nights. And I think to myself - what a wonderful world. The colors of
the
rainbow - so pretty in the sky - are also on the faces of people of
passing by.
I see friends shaking hands - saying "how do you do." - They're
really saying I love you. I hear babies cry - I watch them grow.
They'll learn
much more than I'll ever know. And I think to myself - what a wonderful
world.
Remember
the kiddies and our service people. Be
good to the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy.
See ya
next time. Ever toodles! MONA
