VACATION

Before
I tell you about our vacation I want to tell you about something funny
that
happened at church. At least I think it’s funny. Remember I told you
that I get
bored in church? Well, last Sunday the preacher asked everyone to stand
for his
prayer. I was standing between Mom and Dad and I was doing something
interesting. I was trying to stand on one foot. I lost my balance and
fell
right down on the floor, during the prayer. I looked up to see Mom
frowning at
me and Dad was smiling. Maybe he did the same thing when he was a kid.
We
usually go to a state park for our vacation but this time Dad took us
up into
Canada. We went camping in the Algonquin Provincial Park. How do you
like those
big words? Dad drove us up in our big van so we could take all our
camping
gear.
Our
tent is big enough for all of us to sleep in our sleeping bags and
still have
room for our suitcases and other stuff. We have a camp stove that Mom
and Dad
used to cook our meals on. Sometimes Mom decided that we would eat in
the big
lodge. We had to clean up when we did that.
We
got
to go swimming in the lake every day. Emily didn’t swim of course but
she had
fun playing in the sand with her shovel and bucket. She would get
covered with
sand and Mom had to wash her off before she went back into the tent.
One
day Dad took Henry and me on a canoe trip. He rented a big canoe with
two
paddles and life jackets for us boys. Dad used to be a life guard at a
swimming
pool in the city, so he’s a good swimmer.
We
took turns paddling the canoe and found out how hard it is to go in a
straight
line. Of course that didn’t make much difference because there was
nothing for
us to run into. We had to wear our caps and put on lots of sunscreen to
keep
from getting sunburned. Dad took his camera along and took lots of
pictures.
With
all of our hiking, swimming, paddling the canoe, and camp fires we got
plenty
tired and didn’t have any trouble sleeping at night. I think that was
our best
vacation ever.
