Musings

Hmmm
By Mona Lease
Hi, all! As I pen this column - 2/8/'13 - people are gathering in the
state capitols across the USA at 10 EST (corresponding time zones,
too). Under the umbrella of "We the People," all who are attending
these peaceful demonstrations are finally putting an organized voice to
the local powers - we are protecting our 2nd Amendment right - owning
and carrying a weapon..."We voted you politicians in at our state level
to make our voice heard in our nation's capitol - start talking" is the
theme.
I've done extensive research on the "Facebook idea." People post this
stuff to their "wall" for others to read. My question would be - "Does
anyone in the Governor's Mansion or the White House read your "wall?"
Facebook, and all it takes to support that capability, trade in the top
10 positions on NASDAQ daily. We looked at that a few columns back now.
I extend my best wishes to all who are making their desires and
appearance known. Thank you. Again, if you want to help - join the NRA.
You do not need to own or fire a gun. You do not need to go to any
meetings. These are people who are not afraid to stand up for their
rights.
I don't know why people tell me things. They just do. Some time back a
guy told me he had a Dad - and two step-Dads. He told me he was a "real
hellion." He said the second step-Dad told him that, too. And that the
second "Dad" said he was not going to put up with it.
They traveled abroad. As a wide eyed child, he spoke with a veteran of
a Nazi Germany camp. The survivor told him - "Boy, learn all you can -
it will save your life someday. I'm still alive because through all my
book learning - I could work on their jeeps and tanks. They needed me
for that. The conditions under which I lived were not the best. But, I
am alive today to tell you this."
You all know this man. I cannot tell you his name now, as I have not
been able to ask him for permission. I think it's safe to say he will
not care that I share this story with you. I think it's safe to say
that's why he told me. He knows I write exclusively for CNO.
Most think he is "an idiot." Most think he is crazy - that he could "do
better." He's allowed me a glimpse into his life - who he is - what
molded him to be the man he is - and to whom he gives the credit for
this. Yup - the second step-Dad.
Before you read further; consider - The following was when guys were
"drafted"... you were called and you answered the call. It was part of
"Manhood." It was part of "These colors don't run."
A Ship's Company: They all knew him. He was the man that cannot steer,
that cannot splice, that dodges work on dark nights, that aloft holds
on with both legs and swears at the wind - the sleet - the darkness...
the man who is last out and first in when all hands are called... the
man who can't do most work and will not do the rest... the pet of
philanthropists and self-seeking land lubbers... the sympathetic and
deserving creature that knows all about his rights, but knows nothing
of courage - of endurance and of the unexpressed faith - of the
unspoken loyalty that knits a ship's company. - Joseph Conrad
Whining, grumbling, and complaining in the midst of plenty are not
simply unattractive; they are the symptoms of selfishness! An
overriding concern with the self is not the business of citizenship.
Among good citizens; Aristotle told us - "The salvation of the
community is the business of them all."
All Hands??
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
