Introducing Billy
APPENDECTOMY
By Delbert Blickenstaff
The next day was Sunday and I didn’t feel any better. I was able to get
up and move around a little, but I sure didn’t feel like going to
church. Dad stayed home with me while the rest of the family went to
church. Nelly was glad that I stayed home.
Generally I felt a little better and I walked around a little but I
noticed that I had to bend over a little because it still hurt.
In the afternoon Grandma and Grandpa came over to see how I was doing.
Grandma told me about the time she was in the hospital and the doctors
took out her gall bladder. I asked her if that hurt and she said “no”
because she was asleep. I’m surprised that she didn’t wake up when they
did the operation.
Later in the day my belly pain got worse and I started throwing up. I
had never done that before and it was terrible. Dad checked my belly
again and it hurt a lot worse this time. He told Mom that I need to go
back to the hospital.
This time a different doctor checked my belly and he agreed with Dad
that I had appendicitis. I was moved to a hospital bed and a nurse
stuck a needle in my arm which was hooked to a bottle of water.
A different doctor came in and told me that he would give me some
medicine that would make me go to sleep and I wouldn’t feel a thing. It
wasn’t long after that they moved me to a different room and I went
sound asleep.
When I woke up I didn’t know where I was at first. Then I saw Mom and
Dad and I realized I was in my hospital room. I didn’t move much
because my right side was sore. I asked what happened to me and Dad
said that the surgeon took out my appendix. I said “why” and Dad said
that it was inflamed, whatever that is, and that it was causing my
belly pain.
I stayed in the hospital for three days and was able to eat soup and
ice cream. Then I went home and Nelly was sure glad to see me.
