Darke County Senior Scribe
The snow arrives…
then it’s gone
By Lois Wilson
Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of the
season with her insightful look at the important events of the day.
This time it’s snow. Wilson offers three poems, each addressing a
different look at the recent snowfall. The accuracy of predictions, the
splendor of the ice spears, and finally, the inevitable thaw.
Wilson's completed set - four volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

CRYSTAL GLAZING
The day’s forecast was for a flurry,
A flake or two—never a worry.
So running errands, I took my time.
The sky grew dark; the wind went whirry.
The snow fell fast in its fury.
I couldn’t stop my car on a dime.
Disregard predictions for this clime.

EPHEMERAL
Drop by drop ice spears grow
From the roof’s melting snow.
Along the edge they cleave,
Icicles on the eave.
Sunshine makes them glisten,
Dooming them; don’t listen—
Splendor dies at the sound
And lies shattered on the ground.

THE THAW
First falls snow,
Beauty bright.
It is slow,
But the awe
Melts away
As the thaw
Sinks it low,
Turns the white
To dark gray
Then to black.
Oh! Alack!
Bring beauty back!
