Musings
of a Senior Scribe
The
Dad
By Mona Lease
Hi,
all! There's so much to write about, some
days I don't know what to leave for another column. As I write this,
the
Whittaker family is gearing up for another "Sara Poker Run."
I've written of this in other columns. My reason is that to
qualify for a
scholarship you must be in FFA and can not have over a B average. Sara
was an
avid FFA student and struggled to get a B.
I've
said this before and I'll say it again -
and again. Grades are no indicator of how honest a person is or how
"good'
they are. Some of my truest friends - who have been there for
me when my
chips were down and theirs were, too - had little book learnin'" and
much
"Kleenex Knowledge." That is to say that they gave me their last
dollar - and I them...or my last can of soup - you get the
idea.
Sometimes money is not "all powerful." Sometimes a
"presence" is all that's required. Sometimes you just need to say
something to someone.
In
that vein - just maybe a recipient of
the "Sara Scholarship" will have an idea - something to say. Maybe
they will have a new perspective - a fresh understanding of how to
"fix" a few agricultural problems. Maybe the answer will come from
Darke County. It is possible.
And,
I realize this is a little early
but - while it takes a Mother to "gentle a boy" - it takes a Man to
be a Father - a Dad. A Mom can teach the table manners, washing behind
the
ears, "always wear clean underwear in case you get in a wreck," and
the like. But the Dad has the job of standing strongly and saying no -
and
sticking to the no. And the yes always staying yes. That's a hard job
in these
times of loose morals and "keeping up with the Jones."
So,
to all you Dads out there who get up every
day and summon the courage to say "no" to the latest gidget
and
gadget your child wants - Bravo!! Happy Father's Day to you all. Always
let
your yes be yes and your no be no.
Remember
school is out for the summer - and the
kiddies aren't watching for you. Remember our service people. Be good
to the
furry and feathered ones out thee. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever
Toodles!! MONA.
