Musings

Aww,
Buckeye Chuck!!!
By Mona Lease
Hi,
all!! For those of you who know me - you'll
know that my family loves to dig in the dirt. Heck, we'll plant just
about
anything we think we'll eat. I'll freeze anything from the garden I
think will
freeze. One year when I was a wee
kiddie
- my paternal Grandpa planted a field of turnips. You guessed it - they
all
grew. That fall, my Grandparent's porch was stacked a good quarter of
the way
out from the east wall. There they stood all neatly stacked in their
wooden
baskets. While my Grandmother was less than pleased - we kiddies would
look and
smile - that was Grandpa - our horse shoe pitchin', potato &
turnip
plantin', crow lovin', popcorn eatin' Grandpa. To this day I can't look
at a
crow without thinking of him and his weathered, ever smiling face.
As
for the groundhogs - all I've ever seen them
"do" is dig. My family had an old fruit stand that was no longer
used. Groundhogs took up residence there. These critters had escape
routes
under it. They chewed through 3" of concrete porch to make routes from
the
front to back and side to side. As big as they get, 15 - 20#; I
understand why
Granny Clampett cooked them.
As
I write this, more snow is falling. I've
paid now for the third time for 5 -6" of snow to be moved. Buckeye
Chuck -
were you wearing sunglasses when you made your prediction? I've heard
that
there has been more than one "Buckeye Chuck." I've heard that's not
even the name of the one they use now. Maybe this one has cataracts.
The upshot
to all of this is that it's too late in the season for this to stay -
it'll
just make another mess.
And
lastly - when I started writing for CNO, I
told my Editor about my column and that I included recipes. To date - I
have
not done that. For Easter try this one:
Breakfast
Sausage Ring - 1 roll of Jimmy Dean
Sausage (any flavor), 2 - 7.5 oz tubes of Pillsbury Buttermilk biscuits, 2 cups of
shredded Cheddar cheese
(or any; some will string out like Provalone).
Preheat oven to 350. Brown sausage and
drain. Open 1 can of biscuits and
flatten into a larger circle. Spray a bundt cake pan and line the
bottom with
the biscuits you just made larger, overlapping as you go.
Top
the biscuits with 1 cup of shredded cheese.
Top the cheese with the browned sausage. Top the browned sausage with
the
remaining shredded cheese. Using the second can of biscuits, flatten
them like
you did the first tube and cover the layer of cheese you just put in
the bundt
pan, overlapping like the bottom. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden
brown.
Let cool 10 - 15 minutes before you turn it out onto a plate. Slice and
serve.
This is great for a breakfast buffet. It's also easy enough that the
kiddies
can help you. Wash your hands first!!
And
for you single gals out there (or whomever)
- If you need a place to get tires & other auto parts and get
them
installed on the premises - try Trent's on SR 36. They are a good bunch
of guys
- eye for detail and matching colors with the best they have on the
lot. 937-548-1308.
Remember
the kiddies and our service people.
Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and
healthy.
See ya next time!! Ever Toodles!! MONA
