Diving
By Delbert Blickenstaff
I’m eight years old now and I can write most of the words in my
stories. Grandpa still helps me with some of the words.
Henry and I love to swim at the Y and dive off the diving board. So we
asked Mom if we could take diving lessons and she said yes.
We go once a week and practice for about an hour. There are eight boys
in our class and our teacher is a college student who is a really good
diver. He can do flips and twists and other complicated dives.
I told you before that Henry could already do a Jack Knife dive so he
is working on a front flip now. I’m learning to do the Jack Knife and
it’s a lot harder than it looks. The main idea is to go into the water
straight up and down so you don’t make a big splash. Which is just the
opposite of the Cannon Ball that I did last year. When I get this dive
learned I want to learn the Back Flip.
When Emily gets bigger Henry and I can teach her all these dives. Of
course she’ll have to learn to swim first. She’s not afraid of the
water and loves to go in the neighbor’s back yard pool with her life
jacket on. Henry and I will make her a champion diver.
Hasta lluego.
