Introducing Billy
Hitch-Hiking
By Delbert Blickenstaff
One day Grandpa was talking about being in college and he mentioned
hitch-hiking. I didn’t know what he was talking about so I asked
him. He said that he didn’t have a car and when he wanted to go
somewhere he had to ride with one of his friends or hitch-hike.
Grandpa said it was common for guys his age to stand along the side of
the road and ask for a ride by sticking their thumbs out. A few
girls would “thumb” a ride but only when they were with their brothers
or boyfriends.
One weekend when Grandpa was in his last year of college he suddenly
decided to go home for a short visit. He and Grandma were married
and they had a two year old boy, my uncle Paul. A friend had
offered to take them as far as Greenville which was only 20 miles from
home. Grandpa thought it would be a nice surprise for his parents
to receive a call from him.
So the three of them jumped in the friend’s car and off they
went. When they got to Greenville the friend went on and Grandpa
called his home. No one answered. Oh well, I’ll call uncle
Will and he will come a get us, he thought. They weren’t home
either. So Grandpa and Grandma decided to hitch-hike with 2 year
old Paul. They didn’t have any trouble getting a ride but their
driver was surprised to see the little boy. They finally made it
home and had a good visit. But they didn’t hitch-hike back to
college.
I asked Grandpa if he would take me hitch-hiking but he said no because
it wouldn’t be safe. I think it would be fun.
