Musings of a Senior Scribe
Is It Really Free?
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!! For a long time now, I've been watching and listening -
watching the lines form for the "free stuff" - health screens,
prescription coverage, church donations, etc. "I have to go to Druid
Place and fill out this paperwork"...."Joe said I need three copies of
my income"....Audrey wants two years of my rent receipts"...."Creezil
needs my Dr.'s signature" ...."Craven said my Landlord has to sign
papers stating I am working off my rent"..."Ditzler has to see what my
car is worth" - etc.
If gas is $3.50 a gallon, your car gets - say 10 mpg in town, and you
drive 50 miles crisscrossing in a city - what have you saved? At it's
widest - Greenville was 4 miles. A trip across that and back is 8
miles. Conceivably - there went a gallon of gas - or close to it.
If you get to your destination to find that "Elmer Fudd just left and
we don't know when he'll return" - is that a wasted trip? Do you figure
the $3.50 for the gas is deducted from the "freebie?" Would it still be
free or is it now $3.50? What about the oil the car used - or the wear
on the tires, belts, other fluids, tags, etc? When you "try again
later" - do you double the gallon of gas into this equation?
For all of the emotions I've seen through these events - anger, hatred,
rage, bitterness, - I've never heard of or seen anyone, that was happy
or close to happy during this. Is it just me? -or would it be simpler
to give up a new, improved cell phone, keep the "outdated" one, and
avoid the hassle I keep hearing "these people" create?
With the warm weather here - finally! - I would think it would be more
"freeing" to laze around a grill in the backyard at the end of the
day...add a burger and a cold one - alcohol or not. What would that be
worth? And who decides if my cell phone is "outdated?" It still lets me
call and order a pizza or call to say "hi, hope your'e feeling better"
to sick friends.
With all of this in mind - You all know, or know someone who knows, how
to choose meats for the grill - and how to grill them. I can only add
the sauce.
Jack Daniels Barbecue Sauce: Ingredients - 1/2 to 3/4 cup of Jack
Daniels, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 4 cloves of garlic finely chopped, 2
cups catsup, 1/3 cup vinegar, 3 T. Worchestershire Sauce, 1/2 cup brown
sugar firmly packed, 3/4 cup molasses, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2
teaspoon salt, 1/4 cup tomato paste, 1 teaspoon liquid smoke, 1/2
teaspoon Tobasco Sauce. Prep: - Combine onion, garlic, and Jack Daniels
in a 3 quart saucepan. Saute until translucent - about 10 minutes. Add
the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Simmer uncovered until
reduced and thickened - about 15 - 25 minutes. Add more Jack Daniels if
you desire a stronger flavor. Enjoy!!
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
