Icon Friends?
By Mona Lease

Hi, all! I'm always amazed at how these columns form themselves and from where they originate.

At the Fair, I was casually visiting a specialty clothing tent. In the street in front of the tent, a Father was telling his daughter he did not bring her to the Fair to argue with her. They entered the same tent as I and immediately the daughter started demanding her Father buy her this dress, this handbag, etc. He asked if she needed it and she got louder. With a smirk on her face; she disgustedly sighed - yeeesssss. She looked to be about 14. I asked her if the handbag was leather. She did not know. My reason for asking is - pleather, vinyl, naugahyde, faux leather, etc. - they are all substandard. They will not hold up long - they will crack and peel. Settings like the above are full of this stuff. It always carries a very hefty price tag. Leather - the "real deal"; will outlast the desire to carry or wear it. Most assuredly it will be "passe" when next spring arrives to tell us what the "in" fashion is. Which brings me to my Editor Amanda's friend - Brenda Baker. I'm told Brenda always said - "You gotta be happy with yourself" - or words to that effect. I always say - "I am not in this world to please anyone."  And, on to my Editor Bob's interview with Jeff Madewell of Higgins-Madewell. Bob quotes Jeff as saying "You gotta get out of bed on a different side every morning." My interpretation of that is - It is a truism that if you want to head off diseases like dementia, etc. or keep "brain healthy"  - do a reverse routine...brush your teeth with the opposite hand...start walking with your non-dominant foot. This is harder than it sounds and forces you to concentrate on your actions - which opens up new pathways in the brain. It is used with stroke patients, too. How much could it help we who are reportedly "OK?"

In the example of the Fair-going  Daddy and his daughter - Is that all he is to her - Santa Claus/ATM machine? Have we given that much power to the money?...I love you, Daddy - Daddy forks out more money? How did she get that idea?...where?

I do not know if Jeff Madewell and Brenda Baker knew each other but - I think we lost a "living, breathing answer" in someone who was not afraid to be herself...that means going "against the grain" in today's society...by the way. Back to Jeff - I caught a concert of their's...very good...good acoustic guitar work...shows a lot of practice.Jeff lives "against the grain" by the very fact that he will not say "I am blind - give me some money and I will go lie down somewhere and call it a day."

And, I'll add this - Have you noticed that you do not see the fake nails as often as you used to in the past - or the deep tans - or the frosted hair? I put all of the above together like this - literally combined billions were spent on Fair stuff, fake nails, etc. Still - for all the money - people aged, got sick and played the game of "This season's fashion is" - and in the end were not really happy - they just "looked" like they should be happy.

At a local store I saw a sign you could buy that read - "Be yourself. An original is worth more than a copy." Do you suppose that Jeff and Brenda knows/knew that? I am sorry Brenda is gone and sorrier I never met her. She sounds like one of those "live wires" that leave an indelible imprint on you.To Jeff and Brenda - Thanks for not being afraid to be you - for being able to say - This is who I am, what I have to offer, and for what I stand." I think you are icons disguised as friends.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
