Depression
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! I've been meaning to write this column and other subjects seemed more important - more in tune with the calendar.

I've been speaking to people lately and hearing about their depression. They say it is the holidays...then again - in July it was something else. Before I continue I need to state that I am not speaking of depression over the loss of something...a job, house, etc....or a loved one. I'm speaking of the chronic depression...of no mater what happens - the depression is still there. I've spoken with others and here are the findings:

What have you always want to do or be - or say? One woman went to a church that everyone said was bad - she would not be happy there - it was not a "normal church." The point here is not to debate which church is right or wrong; but - that is where she felt she would be happy. And she is! I could go on with examples like this. But given the fact that there is only so much space here - I'll move forward.

Search your mind - search your heart. How do you really want to be living on a day-to-day basis? Holidays come and go - which leaves the "daily grind." What have you wanted to do and did not...or at least try? If a negative started it - like the woman and the church - try this. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Start writing - "I do not want to do or be" and why. You will see that negatives only last for so long. After that - write "I would not mind doing/being.."  Then write "I want to do/be..."

If you made decisions because someone wanted you to - what happens when they are gone - and I am not wishing any ill will on anyone - in any way. I believe that at least half of society's ills are due to these very things. And here's why - offer a druggie - or anyone a good job - with good benefits - and lots of media attention. Who will turn down that? In that case - it is what these people want. So - they know what they want to do.

Sadly - there is not enough room here to debate why there are few opportunities in Darke County - or who is to blame for that. But - the point here is - we live in a medicated society. "Surely there is a pill for every ill." Insurance companies are balking at what they are paying. People have reported to me that they are saving for a surgery - their copayment - back, knee, etc. And painkillers are usually not covered past the first 10 days.

But medication will not work on the long haul. People have reported to me that their medication has been dropped after 5 or 7 years - "chronic'' is another condition not covered.

For the depression - check out with whom you hang. Are you listening to the hurting/cheating country music?  I told a girlfriend to drop that music and she did not need the depression meds...by the way. Are your main contacts bringing you up or making you feel worse? If they are offering you a marijuana joint and not their shoulder - you are headed the wrong way. It's a big world with opportunities everywhere.

Figure out what you'd like to do or say and "Go for it!"

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
