County Senior Scribe
Merry Christmas
By Lois Wilson
Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of the
season with her insightful look at the important events of the day.
This time it’s Christmas. Wilson offers two poems and a puzzle, each
addressing a different look at Christmas and the holiday season. The
accuracy of predictions, the splendor of the ice spears, and finally,
the inevitable thaw.
Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

WHAT WOULD YOU
LIKE?
This time of year
The children hear,
“What would you like
For Christmas?”
They think of play,
So they may say,
“A bright blue bike
At Christmas.”
And as they grow,
You hope they know
That Jesus’ birth
Is Christmas.
You hear one year
Their answer clear,
“Just peace on Earth
This Christmas.
Not toy or ball,
But joy to all,
That’s what we’d like
For Christmas.”

FIT FOR AN ELF
Mrs. Claus posed, “Santa, you’re crazy
For keeping that elf. He’s so lazy.
Why don’t you send him packing back home?”
“Yes,” said Santa, “he just stands around;
A good job for him I haven’t found.
He doesn’t want to return to Nome.
“The elf moans that this climate’s too cold
And makes him sluggish. He’s growing old.
Plus he claims he’s never liked to roam.”
Santa thought, and a solution came.
His answer would bring the elf some fame
And could cure his work and cold syndrome.
Santa spoke, “Elf, I’m not tyrannical.
Try moving south to the Botanical—
You’ll be that garden’s first real-life gnome!”
