Culture Shock!
By Mona Lease
Hi, all! I had heard the rumors. Her Dad had told me face to face, that
he had heard she was leaving - she had not told him, though. He said he
did not believe it. I called Rannie the other day. She said - "Uh, Mona
- I'm in Vegas." What? So - how is Vegas? She laughed, sighed, and
gasped - "there's just no real words I know to describe it all."
She's met people from countries she never knew existed. - met movie
people on the street! Out there, they stamp your Driver's License full
of holes that say void. You're given a piece of paper and your voided
license. Your new license arrives in the mail. She asked if I had ever
heard of Fremont Street. Yes - I have.
Fremont St. lies in the heart of Las Vegas. In a city that "never
sleeps" - there is always something to do or see. Reportedly - some 17
million plus people visit Vegas every year - from everywhere. Rannie
told me people dress in everything from robe-like clothes that drag the
ground to clothing looking like it belonged in a Strip Club or a
Sultan's Harem - all on public streets - all in broad daylight!
Fremont Street sports a video screen that is 1,500' high, 90' wide and
is suspended 90' above the Pedestrian Mall. The screen has 550,000
watts of concert quality sound with 12.5 million LED lamps. In the
summer, shows are every hour until 1 am and last roughly 6 minutes.
These shows are largely local talent. But think - if you see "high
profile" people on the street - it is more than possible that a member
of a "renowned group" has taught the local talent.
The Fremont Experience offers 3 stages of music - covering most of the
styles...country, rock, blues, etc. Talent for the stages is -
International Superstars, requiring a charge and local talent is free -
get a drink, pick a spot, and enjoy! There are also gambling casinos -
I am not a gambler, though.
I am always interested in meeting new people - learning new ways, new
foods and the like. So - imagine leaving Darke County and going where
the odds are very good that you will run into your favorite musician or
movie star, etc...maybe have lunch in the same place! Imagine living
where it won't get 17 degrees below zero - or not colder than 32
degrees - and that "winter" lasting roughly a month! Mostly, imagine
this - Rannie said no one cares about your past out there - no one
really cares where you were before "Vegas." Seemingly - everyone is
there to enjoy Vegas - sights, sounds, food and all. I've heard it
said - "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas." But, I wonder -
could it be a good thing if some of "Vegas" left Vegas - you know -
just enjoy the food, music and each other?
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
