Darke County Senior
Scribe
Remembering
our heroes
By Lois Wilson
Once again
Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson offers her insightful look at
the important events of the day.
This time it’s Memorial
Day. Wilson offers two poems, each addressing a different look at how
we remember our heroes… and what they did for us.
Wilson's
completed set -
four volumes - of published poetry is now available and is offered as
a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great
poetry and help a local youngster attend college. For additional

MEMORIAL
DAY
I
remember:
Grandmothers—
Short women with white hair
pinned back
Serving warm cookies for a
snack.
Grandfathers—
One tending garden and
livestock;
The other laying bricks and
rock.
Mother and Father—
Teachers wanting all to
succeed,
Living models of honest deed.
We
remember:
Family and friends—
Always there in various roles,
Caring, supporting in life
goals.
The
unknown—
Those we have not met
But will not forget.
Some bravely fought to keep us
free,
Giving their lives for
liberty.
For
all of these we kneel to pray
And
thank God for each one today.

MONUMENTS
OF THE HEART
A
flag and white cross mark each grave
At
burial sites of the brave.
These
heroes born of history
Fought
to preserve our liberty.
Family
and friends we honor too;
Never
have we forgotten you.
Memories
flow forth every day.
For
each we place a love bouquet.
We
sense the presence of their soul
And
give thanks for their lifetime role.
