Jesus and the Grinch
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! I had readers express an interest in this subject. Since I've written about said subject previously - and I'm too lazy to go back through the columns - I've rewritten it. For me - every time I think about this subject - a new question arises. Enjoy!

So the first "Christmas" was when this baby Jesus was born - as I see it. It's recorded in the King James Bible...which also records the Wise Men bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. (First new question: "Is that all He got...no material for diapers - or extra blankets - bibs, etc?) As I write this (12/2/2015), scrap gold is worth: 24k gold (pure .999) $33.82 a gram. 18k gold $25.36 a gram. 14k gold $19.73 a gram. A Troy Ounce of gold is $1,051.80. I follow this at goldcalc.com. More of the story is Jesus' parents sold the gold to pay for something - passage to Egypt I think, as they were running from some king who wanted the baby dead.

Frankincense and myrrh are two of the most powerful oils (from tree resins) that have healing properties - antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial. They both sell at about $95 for 0.5 oz - for the purest - (it depends on how it is processed...cold-pressed, steam distillation, etc.).

I've been hearing and reading about how we need to "put Christ back in Christmas" - how we need to stop saying Happy Holidays and start saying Merry Christmas. People have gotten so "up in arms" over this that there have been pictures posted on the internet showing people holding signs saying this. Now - I'm going to side-step the "What would Jesus want us to do (It's His birthday) and move to: "Isn't this supposed to live in our hearts where it can't be "taken down" or we're told "you can't say it like that?" What would happen if it were all taken away - you know - our "right" to publicly or maybe privately observe Christmas - or anything else someone finds "offensive?" And I cite the following:

"The Grinch, with his Grinch feet, ice cold in the snow/Stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so?/It came without ribbons, it came without tags./It came without packages, boxes or bags./And he puzzled for three hours, until his puzzler was sore./Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before./Maybe Christmas, he thought doesn't come from a store./Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."  This is from The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss....released on November 17, 2000 in the United States. Adults and kiddies have been watching this every year for the last 15 years? (I scratch my head here - tell you why in a minute.) The Grinch returned to Whoville on Christmas morning thinking everyone would be sad - maybe even crying. I think he would have laughed if that had been the case. But he found them gathered together - singing!

Question 1: Would we sing if all the Grinch stole were taken from us? Question 2: What would happen if we gave each other medicine and money for Christmas? And for my head-scratching: The movie/book The Grinch Who Stole Christmas was geared to the kiddies and billed as a family movie...with an object lesson. (Thanks Dr. Seuss - wish I could have met you - I have more questions!!). Does this mean that we adults are not supposed to take the Grinch's realizations to heart?..  especially since the Grinch was "rejected by the Whos as a child  and lived in spiteful seclusion for most of his life" (from the internet information about the movie...which cost an estimated $123 million to make.) And I read somewhere that unless we become like little kiddies.....there's just some things we will never see (understand).

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!!
