Hi, all!! I had a request for an old column. I'm not searching my
records - I'm too lazy - I'll rewrite it. The people with whom I've
spoken regarding this, seem to like how I say it. A few faces lit up
and one person started bouncing on their feet saying - "Yeah - right -
true - , etc." So - I hope you all had a Merry Christmas or Happy
Holidays…
- or whatever you are comfortable saying.
I've been hearing and reading that people want "Christ" put back in
Christmas - you have to say "Merry Christmas" - not Happy
Holidays....which is somehow "pagan" - or of the Devil. (I'm not sure
that's "pagan" - seems to me that this Devil character would not want
any of us "happy" - that's just me, though.).
People on Facebook are downright adamant about "saying" Merry
Christmas. (And I think that's pretty easy when you're in your "comfort
zone" at home - in comfortable clothes - and a hot cup of java. That's
just me, though.). But, I wonder if this is how this Jesus person would
want us to act. We spend untold collective millions of dollars on
presents and it's His birthday. As a side issue - I've heard and read
about the 10 Commandments being missed in our public buildings . I
looked up those, too. The first five have to do with how you treat
God....(6)How to treat your parents (7)No killing.(8)No adultery. (9)No
stealing. (10)No lying. (11)No coveting (wanting something or someone
so badly you are willing to do any of the above - #6-10 - to get
them/the things.). My question is: If you looked at the above "list" -
would you stop lying, cheating, stealing, killing etc? And do we
have to have a posted list to remind us? I looked up this, too.
Deuteronomy 6:7 (King James Bible) says we're supposed to talk about
these things: to our children, when we are home, when we are on the
road, when we lie down and when we get up. (If we do this - would we
need the "list" posted in a public building? Isn't the "talking about"
really reminding ourselves? - Just me, though.).
And I wonder - Is the "acid-test" to this when we encounter "the ones"
- you know - you're driving down Wagner Avenue and someone cuts in
front of you, nearly causing a wreck. Many would "flip off" the
@&%* driver. Some have yelled out the window of their car. You
would not believe what I've heard. What happened to the "Merry
Christmas?" Isn't this supposed to be an "all year thing?" If it takes
having to "say" Merry Christmas or the 10 Commandments posted for all
to see before we behave rightly - did we "have it" at all - ever?
"Put Christ back in Christmas" - Since I really don't expect this Jesus
person to come here in person to do this - that leaves us - doesn't it?
For the guy who cut you off - maybe he got the call saying his kid had
died - or his house was on fire - or some other catastrophe. You don't
know. And as long as we - as a people - are "deciding" how to "say" -
"be happy" (That's what Merry means. I looked that up, too. It means:
full of cheerfulness, liveliness, and good feelings. Marked by or
offering fun and good feelings. Blithe, jocurd, cheerful - uninhibited
enjoyment of festivity.) we're never going to know. Seriously -
"saying" Merry Christmas - or "seeing" the 10 Commandments in a public
place - they're just symbols - aren't they - same as a wedding ring? If
you lose - or sell the ring - or it wears out - you're still
married...it's written on your heart and mind.
Again I hope you all had a Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays - however
you say it. And - I try practice this "understanding", too. It was hard
in the beginning - and much easier now. I'll never be perfect at it -
and that's ok...no one is perfect. We just need to know we all have
"rights" and sometimes that means exercising the "right" to walk away
and let someone else have their right for a time.
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
