Mrs. Campolo
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!! With so many jobs being lost, I thought now might be a good
time to submit this to you. I've had it for a few years. I never realty
thought there would be a use for it. Still, throwing it in the trash
seemed wrong. Off the top, it shows how big words and "labels" strung
together, can be misleading. For you parents out there - this one's for
you. To you Moms - rethink being "just a housewife" or "just a Mom."
"Popular writer and speaker Tony Campolo, tells a story about his wife.
When he was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, his wife
was often invited to faculty gatherings and inevitably a woman lawyer
or sociologist would confront her with this question, often in a
condescending tone of voice - "And what is it that you do, dear?"
Mrs. Campolo gave this as her response. "I am socializing two
Homosapiens in the dominant values of the Judeo-Christian tradition in
order that they may be instruments for the transformation of the social
order into the teleologically prescribed utopia inherent in the
eschaton." Then she would politely and kindly ask the other person -
"And what is it that you do?"
The other person's response was rarely as overpowering.
Too often women feel as if they should apologize for being Mothers or
wives who "work at home" for the betterment of their families and
husbands. In reality, the roles can be noble callings - ones with far
reaching and eternal consequences."
I will get you started thinking through all of the implications here.
This is for every Mother who worked with their child endless hours to
get him/her to spell their name - or say "aren't I" - instead of "ain't
I" This is for every Mother who taught her son to open a door for a
woman or carry packages for an elderly woman who had no one to help
her. This is for every Mother who told her daughter to act like a lady
and you will get treated like a lady. This is for every Mother who told
her son that he needed to treat girls with respect - if he did not want
to marry her, someone else would want to marry her - do not ruin it for
him. This is for every Mother who sat with her daughter that was
crying. "The" boy had broken up with her and was immediately seen with
another girl. The Mother said: "If he would do that now - what would he
do if you were married with a couple of kiddies?"
Kudos to you Mothers and butterflies, too - for stepping up to the
plate and telling the truth - unpleasant and heartbreaking as it can be
too much of the time.
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
