Darke County Senior Scribe
Have you
noticed how things are shrinking?
By Lois Wilson
Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of her
game with an insightful look at the important events of the day.
This time it’s getting less for more. Wilson offers five poems, each
addressing a different look how our purchasing power seems to be
decreasing. She has no fear as she takes on the companies that
manufacture our toilet tissues, facial tissues, cereal… even the
clothes we wear.
Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

COMING UP SHORT
Facial tissues that I chose
Always used to fit my nose.
Now when I need a tissue,
I find there is an issue:
Its size has shrunk;
My need is sunk.
For just one Puff
Is not enough!

COUNTER FITTING
You blink at the toilet paper roll—
See its width is one-half inch smaller.
You think, “What was the company’s goal?
It’s a cinch the grinch made a dollar.”

LESS IS MORE? FOR WHOM?
Morning Wheaties—
The box? Now it’s thin.
Warning: Eat these—
The pox? Less within.
I cry. I scream.
I go a howlin’.
For my ice cream
Is no half-gallon.
Bathroom tissue
Has lost a half inch.
That gloom issue,
More cost—paper pinch.
I stop. I blink.
My neediness shows.
They chop. They shrink.
Their greediness grows.
I shop. I think,
Don’t mess with my clothes!

IT’S NOT FIT
Clothes designers make us look slimmer.
It’s a trade-off, trimmer for grimmer.
Because of fashion each lady lacks
Some practical pockets in her slacks.

MATHEMAGIC
You'll find what was the standard weight
Of many products that you buy
Has dropped down to a different state;
The packaging can fool your eye.
When you shop, you must be aware;
Just look at your favorite brand.
Read every label and compare,
Or you might miss the sleight of hand.
Some firms divert with devices
And conjure with no trace of fear.
Watch, they levitate the prices
And make their products disappear!
