Darke County Senior Scribe
Honoring those
who gave the ultimate price
By Lois Wilson
While most of Americans across the country enjoy their first three-day
weekend of the summer, Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson reminds
us of the reason for Memorial Day holiday.
It isn’t about bar-b-ques or family get-togethers. It’s about those who
died so that we may enjoy this and so many other holidays we observe…
and the freedoms that go with them. Lois offers two selected pieces
from her poetry collection honoring those who paid the ultimate price.
Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

HONORED HEROES
Aware of the danger
If they saw a need,
They lived by the creed—
No one is a stranger.
Showing self-sacrifice
Their actions were brave,
And nobly they gave
While ignoring the price.
On the path that they chose,
Courage in distress
Secured their success.
Thus are born true heroes.

FOR MORE THAN SELF
Early settlers had the vision
With courage made the decision
To sail across the mighty sea
Seeking a land of liberty.
They stepped upon the shore.
Some worked on farms; some plied the trades
They fought for freedom, formed brigades.
True to the cause, they knew its worth,
With victory—a nation’s birth.
Its open door lured more.
Founders engaged in wise discourse,
Laid forth the laws—the country’s course.
They clearly outlined human rights,
The product of their keen insights.
Tribute to the brave of yore
Faithful to the task they bore,
Heroes for evermore—
The ones who came before.
