I Remember When…
“Beautiful
Ohio,” Part II
By Kim Smith
If you but look, the beauty of Ohio can be found everywhere. Just
remove your faces from your Smart phones, open your eyes, and you will
see for yourself.
It has been said many times that in Ohio, one never knows from one day
to the next what the weather will be. No statement could ever prove to
be more true. It is mostly said with irritation or amusement, but to me
the daily surprises are interesting and intriguing. The following is a
poem that I wrote that reflects Ohio’s weather:
Leap of Faith
The trees in the forest,
The shrubs on the hill,
Are asking each other
If Winter’s now still.
“Can we pack away jackets,
Our hats and our coats;
Can we spring forth in green,
Can we grow tender shoots?
“Or will Winter once more blast us,
And coat us with ice?
Will Winter play naughty,
And refuse to be nice?”
They whispered and chattered—
“What shall we do? “
Then great courage they summoned,
And into Spring flew!
As you can see, even Mother Nature didn’t trust Ohio’s weather!
In the Springtime, slow down as your drive along Ohio’s back-roads, and
see the red-buds bursting forth within one woods after another, amidst
the delicate green leaves that are making their way out into the
sunlight.
Watch closely, then, as you approach any bridge, for you will
experience a feast for the eyes—a creek embraced by over-hanging trees.
Whether you travel north, south, east or west, you will find lush
rolling hills during the Spring and Summer, often dotted with cows,
sheep, goats or horses. In the Fall, everywhere you cast your eyes, you
will see trees exploding with red, golden, and orange leaves.
Is Ohio “boring”? Hardly. Ohio is…beautiful Ohio.
God bless all of you!
