Darke County Senior Scribe
May Day
By Lois Wilson
Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of the
season with her insightful look at the important events of the day.
This time it’s May Day. Wilson offers two poems, each addressing a
different look at the annual event. Give it a Whirl, and Double
Rewards, are remembrances of historical celebrations… are they lost to
today’s generation? Read and remember… and enjoy.
Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

GIVE IT A WHIRL
The expectations were high
When the young children danced by
In their annual ballet
At the town’s Maypole display.
Each had a ribbon in hand
And skipped in patterns well-planned—
In and out, around and round,
Dizzy, one dropped to the ground;
Then the others tripped and fell
All in a light-headed spell.
The scene soon became a clean sweep
With children lying in a heap,
A new finale for the plot—
Ribbons spun into one huge knot.

DOUBLE REWARDS
In our school as a rule
No remnants went to waste:
Ribbon bits, beads, and paste,
Papers of varied hues—
So many scraps to choose.
Scissors were the main tool
We used for secret chore:
Cut and fold; paste to hold—
Small baskets, bright and bold.
Fill with flowers for show
And hang by ribbon bow
On knob of neighbors’ door.
Ring the bell; run pell-mell,
Happy? It’s hard to hide.
Inside? A sense of pride
When they found our surprise,
We saw joy in their eyes.
If they knew and didn’t tell,
Then our May Day went quite well.
