Honor
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! I had another request from a reader. This comes from the column dated 7/30/2016 - "I Have Questions." It seems I'm not the only one with questions.

Honor is defined as: high respect; esteem. Mirriam-Webster defines  honor as: homage, reverence, deference. It means respect and honor shown to another. Honor may also apply to the recognition of one's right to great respect or to any expression of such recognition.

This column will take a couple of hard veers to the right and an s-curve or two. Honor and love are not the same thing - hence wedding vows say "love, honor, and cherish" - or they did. I've heard cherish was replaced with obey.

To honor someone (a person in this case - it is possible to honor possessions) - you give them the respect they deserve for the "position" they occupy. We'll use parents here. So - you honor your parents because they had you and kept you. They could have let you be adopted. Their name is on all of the bills - gas/lights, rent/lease/mortgage, car loan, etc. They are responsible for you in the eyes of the state/government: responsible for you going to school - every day/all day...responsible for your physical health - required shots, clothing, shelter, school supplies, etc...responsible for your emotional health - when you don't want to go to school because someone (or a bunch of someones) makes your life miserable, they talk you off of your ledge of despair and you go to school realizing there will always be someone who does not like you or what you wear/say/think/do.

The other side of this self-same coin is that real honor (the kind that makes you turn off the tv/computer and put in your physical appearance to make a difference) has to be earned - by everyone...in this case a parent or parents. I know of cases where a child decided to not be like the parent(s) due to undesirable parenting...which makes the "honoring" a harder thing to accomplish. Without communication both ways - parent to child and child to parent...not much forward-progress is made. But it's easy to honor someone - again, in this case a parent - when there is communication...like letting a child know there are rules we all have to follow - all of us - anywhere we live - as long as we live. Now apply this "honor-logic" to the Mayor - or teacher, etc. Did you get a new picture here? I'll break off the honor talk here.

I had a comment from a reader who did not want to "burst my bubble" with "seeing God, Himself" and "seeing those who believed in Godly principles and practiced them." After I sent my reply to said reader (sorry I do not print actual names), a new thought occurred to me. OK - we see people doing "God's work" but, we do not see God, Himself...my point here.

According to the Bible - the last recorded person to be in God's presence - and return to earth was Moses. And Moses was in God's presence and returned to earth - twice! That was when Moses played stenographer and chiselled out on stone tablets what we know as the Ten Commandments. The reason for the second trip was because Moses' followers became bored - or restless - or scared - or something and demanded an answer from Aaron (who was in charge until Moses' return) as to what was taking Moses so long. They demanded something or someone to worship (worship was a big part of their day..they started the day with worship and ended it with worship). They melted down all of their gold, made a golden calf and were worshipping it. Moses found this sight on his first return trip, became so upset that they could not wait for him, threw down the stone tablets and they broke. God called Moses back up to Him and regave the commandments. (Must have been pretty important to this God to give the information a second time?) My question here is: We were told what to do and how to do it in ten sentences - the 10 Commandments. Is that why we do not see God, Himself? He told us what to do - twice. Thanks reader, for your email to me. I would have never thought of this without you!!

And our current Presidential race fits in pretty well with this column. Media has reported that Hillary is being sued for that nasty Benghazi incident that will not die. Media also reports that groups of people are banding together to get Trump ousted from the Presidential race over his mouth and the obscenities that spew from it. Don't shoot the messenger - this is all if you believe the media and said Bible.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!!
