Darke County Senior Scribe
Basketball,
golf and, of course, the high jump
By Lois Wilson
Once again Senior Scribe Poet Laureate Lois Wilson is on top of the
season with her insightful look at the important events of the day.
This time it’s sports. Wilson offers four poems, each addressing a
sport of a different flavor. They’re in honor of the Olympics… or
basketball… or golf. Take your pick, but enjoy all four.
Wilson's completed set - five volumes - of published poetry is now
available and is offered as a fundraiser for the Senior Scribes
Scholarship Fund. Enjoy great poetry and help a local youngster attend
college. For additional information, contact

COORDINATION
I propose it is easy to see
That most people are not meant to be
A star in any sport.
Often their skills fall short.
If at this premise you would quibble,
Please show us your basketball dribble.

PUTTERING A ROUND
At golf, Dudley is a duffer.
One day he filled out our foursome.
To make sure we did not suffer
And find our weekly game boresome—
We halted each hole at four-putt.
For six holes he was in the rough.
At eight, he hit a drainage rut
And grumbled, "Darn, this course is tough!"
The next nine holes, he still sunk none.
At hole eighteen, he gained his goal.
Did Dudley get a hole in one?
No! But he got ONE IN A HOLE!

NOT UP TO PAR
The first golfer bragged,
“Each time I play this course,
I’m always in the seventies.
No question, it’s for sure—
Never is it more!”
His companion ragged,
“Not to beat a dead horse—
When you are in the seventies,
It is the temperature;
It’s sure not your score!”

RAISING THE BAR
A star athlete
At the track meet,
The high jumper
Faced a stumper.
For the new height
Seemed out of sight.
With downcast mood,
He looked unglued
And groaned about.
His coach called out,
“Don’t think defeat
Or you’ll get beat.
Drop the attitude;
Top the altitude!”
