Crosshairs 2017
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!! For those of you who read my column faithfully, (thanks
much), you'll know that there's some things I just have to find out for
myself. While I was "cruising the information super-highway" or playing
on the world-wide web...I happened across a link to a State of Virginia
site to take an online course for a concealed carry permit - issued by
the Virginia State Police. You have to pay a fee to get the certificate
should you pass the test at the end of the course. And you still have
to pay a fee to the State of Virginia to be issued a concealed carry
permit. They do a background check, which could take up to 90 days. And
this all led me to:
I spoke with am employee at Rural King's Gun Barn in Greenville. He
told me about Kyle Yount - CEO of a local business called Surprise
Break...which I did not know existed. While Ohio will recognize the
Concealed Carry Permit Virginia issues you - classified as
out-of-state...Ohio will only recognize it for 6 (six) months...at
which point you need to get a permit from Ohio...or forget it. And Ohio
requires 2 hours of actual firing a gun in front of a qualified
instructor. For the "ins&outs" of Ohio's requirements for concealed
carry and the actual issuance of the permit - Walt Rich of the Darke
County Sheriff's Office is your man. Kyle knows all of these
requirements, too. I spoke with Walt and he issues the permits. He's
another option with whom to mull over this stuff. You still need
the range time - whatever way you decide to go. There's a fee to get
the permit.
Guns...owning one...concealed carry permits, etc are not a
"one-size-fits-all" situation. If you just like to target shoot and
could not kill anyone (you only pick up a gun to fire it) - you
probably should just go to a range equipped to let you "rent" a
gun...so to speak. In these situations you pay a fee and an instructor
goes with you to a place on their premises. You are handed the gun and
you shoot at a target until the gun is empty. This is available in the
larger cities.
If you are easily "baited or goaded" into an action - you probably do
not need to own a gun and a concealed carry permit will do you no good.
If you have never fired a gun before you should probably steer clear of
the online course. You would need to have the "hands-on" with an
instructor as you will be required to load and unload the gun during
Ohio's two hour range time. There are other requirements on the range
as well.
After having spoken with Kyle Yount ...we agreed the thing to do here
is give you: surprisebreak@hotmail.com. It is the email address for his
business. He will answer all emails and checks them regularly. Together
you can work out a plan just for you and your needs/desires regarding
guns.
A couple of quick things here are: An attitude and a concealed carry
permit do not mix. You would be surprised with whom you do business
that "conceal carry." The conceal carry is not a license to go
"throwing your weight around" or "show off" for your friends. Secondly,
the concealed carry permit actually carries more responsibility. It
means knowing that in an already dangerous situation...you are going to
make it more dangerous when you decide to pull out your gun. People
will "freak out" when they see the gun, which will give whomever is
causing the original problem that split-second they need to do more
damage. This is all a taste of the complexity surrounding guns, the 2nd
Amendment, concealed carry permits, etc. If you want to protect your
2nd Amendment right but do not know much about the above - get behind
the NRA. If you do not want to join - donate money to them. The NRA is
our largest organized group willing to use their voice to protect
everyone's right to bear arms. For more clarification - contact Kyle
Yount. He's knowledgeable and understands your questions, fears, etc.
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
