I Remember When….
Before the earth cooled… winter antics!
By Kim Smith

When I was knee-high to a grasshopper, technology as we know it today was in it’s infancy. So, without electronics, what did my brother, sister and I do to keep occupied? Well, when we weren’t doing chores, we did something shocking and amazing by today’s standards: We entertained OURSELVES! Imagine that! Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall, when we weren’t doing our chores, Mom would scoot us outdoors to make our OWN fun. And fun, we had!

In the Winter, we would have snow-ball fights. Or we would lay in the snow and make “snow angels”.  We lived down a long lane in the “boonies”, and the snow seemed to drift higher down the road. We took advantage of the higher drifts, and made “igloos” out of them. We dug and dug and dug some more, until we had made a deep hole in the drift, deep enough to crawl into and pretend that we were  “Eskimos”. I have no doubt that a real Eskimo would have gotten a good laugh over our antics!

More than once, I wanted to pretend that I was REAL tough. In the dead of Winter, I would walk around outside with no coat on…and no shoes or socks, either! I hung in there as long as I could, until I couldn’t stand it ONE MORE MINUTE! Back into the house I ran, a-shivering and a-shaking! Mom just looked at me and rolled her eye-balls!

And sledding! Kids today still go sledding, but not like they used to! We had a gravel-pit close to our home, and in the Winter, all covered in snow, the gravel-pit was ideal for a long, fast ride. We about wore out that poor gravel-pit, we rode down it so often, screaming and laughing!

This is just the beginning of tales from way back before the Earth cooled… More on the way!

Blessings to you all!
