Paul Harvey - Part II
By Mona Lease

Hi, all!! Last week's column was a Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" - aired in 1965 - it's 50 years old!! It took 50 plus years to get us - the USA - where we are now - wow!! From last week's Paul Harvey aired speech: "If I were the devil, I'd encourage schools to refine young intellect but neglect to discipline emotions - just let those run wild until - the more you do it - you'd have to have drug-sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door." Let that sink in a moment - "refine young intellect" - that means to make them as smart as possible - right?

"....neglect to discipline emotions - just let those run wild." Emotions are how we are "feeling" - happy, angry, love, confident, anxiety, stress, and relaxed are the most common ones we experience. There are 58 listed positive emotions and 61 listed negative emotions when I used Bing to "google" this...or however you say that. So - we have intelligent people running/walking/driving around courageous, comfortable, positive, and energetic (from the positive list) or rude, scared, dissatisfied, revengeful, greedy, and confused (from the negative list). After studying this, you can see that a positive emotion can be used in a bad way and a negative emotion can be used in a good way....you can be positive that you can burn down a garage without getting caught....you can be scared that your life will remain dull/uninteresting, which can (and should) inspire you to make a good change. Paul's speech said: "If I were the devil, I'd encourage schools to refine young intellect but neglect to discipline emotions - just let those run wild." Discipline is defined as: "the practice of training people to obey a code of behavior using punishment to correct disobedience." This gives us smart people with valid emotions (happy, sad, scared, dissatisfied) expressing them whenever/wherever because there was no "emotional training" (discipline) - right?

When I went to school (jeez - I feel old) we were expected to conduct ourselves in a "womanly" or "gentlemanly" manner...no kicking, hitting (with hands, balls, bats, books) spitting, etc. The "discipline" was a note to your parents, a phone call to your parents, or a paddling in severe circumstances. Every teacher had a paddle that could be seen, in the classroom - like a big dog in the yard. Remember a different kiddie every morning leading the Pledge of Allegiance? That was "taking turns" in action.

Now for the scary part. In last week's column - "If I were the devil, I'd soon have families at war with themselves - churches at war with themselves - and nations at war with themselves, until each it it's turn - was consumed." When I put the above "intelligent people" with "no emotional discipline" into the family at war/churches at war/nations at war - with themselves - I get really nervous. In my mind - these are all intelligent people used to getting their own way (emotionally speaking).

Now I understand why Hillary Clinton defends the debated healthcare. It's hers from when Bill Clinton was president. We rejected it then. Now - some 20 years later - we'll take it "or else" - Hilary's positive, encouraged, energetic, and confused - and does not care (or have to care) what we think or feel - scared, dissatisfied, and confused. Lord, Paul - you were right. Good day.

Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
