I Can't
Get No...
By Mona Lease
Satisfaction. Hi, all!! Forty degrees outside and I hear it's too cold.
Where's spring? I wish it would get warm. 85 degrees outside and I hear
it's too hot. Where's the rain? The poor farmers need rain. It rains
two days in a row and I hear it's too much rain. The poor farmers won't
be able to get in the fields.
A week with no sunshine and I hear we need the sun. The poor farmers
will have crops rotting in the fields. The humidity is too high. It's
too hot. It's too cold. The city is tearing up the street...now there
is too much traffic in front of my house. The city won't fix my alley.
I haven't seen an earthworm on my sidewalk in years. It's too hot to
sweep my sidewalk. And on it goes.
The girl and her Grandmother wiped sweat from their brows. After the
breakfast chores were finished, it was out-of-doors to tend the
flowers...thin a few here...move some moss over there. They spoke of
the Kool-Aid they would drink after they were finished in the
yard...how cold it would be to their dry mouth...how good it would
taste. The girl was old enough to open the package herself without
making a mess. She could even add the sugar and water by herself!! She
had always been able to choose the flavor. Today was a day for cherry.
As they finished the outside work, the girl licked her lips - she could
taste the Kool-Aid now.
They washed their hands in the sink fed by the cistern (Cisterns were
big cement-lined holes in the ground that caught rain water which was
used for all chores other than the well's chores...those being cooking
and drinking.) After the Kool-Aid was made and poured in glasses with
ice, they made their way to the shady front porch swing. They spoke of
the work they had already done and the work yet to be done in the
afternoon. The girl thought cherry had never tasted so good.
And I wonder a lot of things. I wonder if the weather would matter so
much if we had a cherry-flavored drink in mind. I wonder if the farmers
and their fields would matter as much with the cherry-flavored drink in
mind. Actually - I wonder if Kool-Aid might be an answer...a little
work...a little sweat...a glass of the cherry-flavored quaff at the
end? Would it all matter less if we had someone to share the said quaff
with us?
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
