Was it a
coincidence?
By Lois E. Wilson
My son, Kevin, and his wife had come from Washington state for a few
days’ visit in the area. He and I planned to go to Dayton on Friday to
do clean-up tasks at a family grave site. But that day it rained 2 ½”.
We postponed the trip to Monday. His son Anthony, my 33-year-old
grandson from Texas, would be here by then and wanted to go with us.
Their wives and my great grandchildren were visiting other relatives in
Indianapolis and all were going to meet that evening for dinner in
Greenville.
As we finished our spruce-up at the graves, I took one last look and
saw Anthony kneeling by his grandfather’s grave. He was offering a
final prayer before we left. My eyes filled with tears.
On the way home from the cemetery, the three of us debated whether to
stop for lunch. They were from different time zones, but I was hungry.
Grandma won, and we enjoyed eating at one of my favorite spots on Rt.
48. Continuing north, I said we could bypass West Milton and directed
them over to Range Line Road.
Kevin and Anthony were in the front seat. They are tall fellows and I
couldn’t see the road ahead. Suddenly they yelled, “Look! Oh my
goodness! We had better stop!” Kevin pulled the car over as far as he
could; they both jumped out of the car and ran across the road.
I got out of the rear seat and only then discovered what they had
witnessed. A lady, probably in her 60’s, had been mowing weeds around a
planted field upon a ledge 4 feet above the ditch. The soft earth had
given way and caused the heavy mower to tip over. It landed on top of
her in the ditch. The mower had smoke coming out of it, and she was
trapped. Fortunately, she had not hit her head on the road when she
fell. But I thought this isnot going to end well. I was consoled by the
fact that Anthony was a trained EMT and had done work in hospital ER
units.
With some effort the two of them were able to lift the mower off the
woman. She got up and tested herself as she walked around. She had no
cuts or visible injuries. Anthony after several tries was finally able
to hoist the mower back up to the field. The woman got back on it and
continued with her mowing. Anthony said, “I told her she should take it
easy the rest of the day.”
Since that day in June, I’ve asked myself, was it all
coincidence? It rained, and we had to change our plans. We
decided to take time for lunch and take that route. Two men from
different places out west just happened to be there. They were strong
enough to help and one was trained for emergency situations. My answer
to it being coincidence is “NO.”It was all God’s hand and how wonderful
to watch his love and power unfold!
