Just Sharing
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!! It's probably because of a maternal Uncle of mine. Leonardo
DiCaprio probably did his part to keep my interest alive. But, I
thought I'd share the following facts about the "unsinkable Titanic."
The RMS (Royal Mail Ship) Titanic was the biggest passenger vessel in
the world when she was unveiled in 1912.
Out of the 2,224 passengers, 710 survived.
On the ship were 109 children. 53 survived.
As a luxury ship, ticket prices were $4,350 ($69,900 today) for first
class, $1,750 for second-class, and #30 for third-class.
At Titanic's voyage, all British ships were RMS...Royal Mail
Ship...responsible for transporting mail each way.
There were 885 Officers and Crew. Of these...23 were female.
The Titanic burned 600 tons of coal per day. She left on her maiden
voyage with 6,000 tons of coal on board....roughly 10 day's worth.
The Titanic had four stacks. Three were for smoke and one was a vent.
Stewards (waiters, waitresses, and maids) numbered 421 on the Titanic.
Of these - 60 survived.
Bellboys (carried luggage and other related tasks) as young as 14 - all
went down with the ship.
A privately-owned restaurant (1st class only) had it's own staff of 66.
Three survived.
The Titanic's interior was inspired by The Ritz Hotel in London,
England. She sported a dual-staircase, velvet drapery, fine
carpeting, crystal chandeliers, etc.
Captain Edward Smith's last words to his crew were: "Well boys, do your
best for the women and children and look out for yourselves."
After hitting the iceberg, it took 2 hours and 40 minutes to completely
sink.
The 7-member orchestra played until the ship completely sank.
Eight ships were used to collect the survivors of the Titanic from the
Atlantic.
Elizabeth Gladys Milvina Dean - youngest Titanic survivor - died in
2009.
Robert Ballard found the wreckage of the Titanic some 400 miles off the
coast of Newfoundland.
Tickets to take a private party down to view the wreckage of the
Titanic is $59,000 per person...through Deep Ocean Expeditions.
Australian billionaire Clive Davis made plans to build a Titanic
replica - Titanic 2. It's to make it's maiden voyage in 2018.
The Titanic was so huge that when she set sail on her maiden
voyage...she sucked in another ship... nearly causing a collision.
The Titanic featured a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a Turkish Bath, a
Squash Court, and two libraries...one for first class...one for second
class.
Top speed for the Titanic was 23 knots...a little over 26 mph.
A new Renault car was among the Titanic's cargo.
The Titanic stocked 20,000 bottles of beer and stout, 1,500 bottles of
wine, and 8,000 cigars for first class only.
Second class on the Titanic was like first class on most other ships.
Most third class cabins on the Titanic had six bunks in them.
Third class passengers could hear the roar of the engines all of the
time.
There were only two bath tubs for the 700 third-class passengers...one
for the women and one for the men.
About 42% of the second-class passengers survived.
About 25% of the third-class passengers survived.
The iceberg was about 100 feet tall.
At 32 degrees, the iceberg was warmer than the water. The ocean water
was 28 degrees...below freezing, but did not freeze due to the salt
content.
If only four of the watertight compartments had been breached - the
Titanic would have stayed afloat. Six compartments were slashed through
by the iceberg.
If the Titanic had hit the iceberg head-on..she would have survived due
to the strength of her bulwarks.
The musicians played for 2 hours and 5 minutes while the ship sank
completely.
The Titanic broke into two pieces in it's final moments before sinking.
The US Senate Inquiry into this disaster led to it's recommending that
all passenger vessels carry "sufficient lifeboats for all passengers
and crew."
Titanic survivor actress - Dorothy Gibson - starred in the silent film
"Saved From The Titanic" four weeks after the wreck - in the same
clothes she wore aboard the ship.
With the money the movie "The Titanic" made, five Titanics could be
made at a cost of 4 million dollars each.
The Titanic was built in Belfast, Ireland...in the Heartland and Wolff
Shipyard. She was launched May 31, 1911.
The Titanic had it's own daily newspaper - "The Atlantic Daily
Bulletin." It was printed daily aboard the ship to include news,
advertisements, stock prices, horse-racing results, society gossip, and
meal menus.
Thousands of artifacts were recovered from the wreckage. Many pieces of
precious jewelry were recovered with the majority of it be sold at
auction.
I omitted the "if only there had beens", the he should haves, and the
why didnts."
This ship has always amazed me. It had a swimming pool...a Turkish
Bath..which is either hot air or hot steam in an enclosed room with a
bath and a massage to follow.
The Titanic had velvet drapes...plush carpeting...paintings on the
walls...crystal chandeliers...padded chairs at the dining table...a
dual staircase that was carpeted. All of this...on a ship!!
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!!! MONA
