Mind, Body, Soul
Hang Loose!
By Mona Lease
Greetings, Gals!! Ok - so either guys are immune to anxiety...or,
they've leaned how to control it...or maybe conceal it. Consider the
following. Keep reaching. Keep stretching. Every little bit counts.
When you're excited, your heart rate spikes, your mind races, your
palms sweat, you start speaking faster, and maybe you tremble a little
bit. When you're anxious your heart rate spikes, your mind races,
your palms sweat, you start speaking faster, and yeah maybe you tremble
a little bit. From a physiological standpoint, the two emotions appear
identical. And yet, one feels great, while the other is a total bummer.
What gives??
12 Genius Tricks For Turning Anxiety Into Excitement
1)Sing "Don't Stop Believin" Like You Mean It. This song, by Journey,
was chosen because it can be easily sung in a wide octave spectrum and
because most everyone knows it. Participants who went all-in not only
were more likely to sing in key, but they reported higher levels of
excitement.
2)Try Anxiety-Reprisal. Courtesy of Harvard Business School
researchers: When you're feeling anxious, tell yourself you're feeling
excited. Since both anxiety and excitement are so-called "arousal
states (of mind)," you don't have to jump through a bunch of mental
hoops to assert that it's a positive state. Your body is already there.
3)Think about Potential Positives. One way to ensure that "anxiety
reappraisal" succeeds is to focus on the outcome. If you're anxious,
chances are that you're thinking "What's gonna happen if this doesn't
work out?" Instead think, "What's gonna happen if everything works
out?" The rest of your thoughts and feelings will get in line behind
this positive-minded thinking.
4)Take the GRE. Research out of the University of Rochester suggests
that taking the Graduate Record Examinations can pump you up - after
the fact. Researchers told test-takers in one group that their anxiety
over the impending exam would boost their score. Turns out, the
researchers were right.
5) Eat Your Yogurt. If the "mind over matter" approach doesn't work,
look to your diet. Studies from the University of Missouri say the
probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum commonly found in yogurt - can alter
the "gene expression" associated with stress and anxiety-related
pathways.
6)Say These Three Words. "I am excited." From the Journal of Marketing
Research, participants in a study were required to make a to-do list of
a major task. Those who uttered the sentence "I am excited" three times
beforehand reported significantly lower stress levels than the control
group.
7)Master "Good-Anxiety." Not all anxiety is bad. In a potentially
dangerous situation - the "arousal state" can help to keep you safe.
Learning how to identify the "good anxiety" can help you identify the
"bad anxiety" that makes you more anxious.
8)Don't "Keep Calm and Carry On." In 2014 and a slogan of World War II
- era London, this major phrase was popular. And it won't do a thing
toward turning your anxiety into excitement. When you calm down, you're
moving your body and mind farther away from an "arousal state."
Even if you feel more content with your existence, you won't feel any
excitement.
9)Put Your Phone Down. Recent research out of Kent State University
says spending time on your phone is directly correlated with increased
agitation and irritability, and decreased contentment. If your mind's
in an arousal state, being on your phone will make you anxious. Put
down the phone.
10)Blow Bubbles. Research from Johns Hopkins University says the simple
act of blowing bubbles is a mind-and-body placating experience. Some
people regularly do this before going to sleep at night.
11)Watch Cartoons Before Getting Your Teeth Cleaned. Everyone
experiences severe anxiety before going to the dentist. It can be
tempered and even overcome by watching cartoons. Adults are
invited to try this.
12)Adopt This Mantra. Often you can feel the onset of an "arousal
state" coming on, like you're about to fall off a tightrope. On one
side you can land on anxiety. On the other, excitement. To ensure you
land on excitement, lift this mantra: "My mind and body are preparing
to give it their all." - Best Life
"Sometimes all you need is for someone to just be there, even if they
can't solve your problems. Just knowing there is someone who cares can
make all the difference." - sun.gazing.com
