Phenomena/Phenomenal?
By Mona Lease
Hi, all!! Rarely will I write about sports. It has to be extraordinary
to capture my attention. That being said -
Maybe it was the fact that on February 4th - we were still not finished
with the second full moon of January...which was called a blood moon or
legend calls it a Wolf Moon when wolves can be heard
howling across the frozen, snowy ground.
Maybe it was because January's second full moon was also a total lunar
eclipse.
Maybe it was because February 2018 will have no full moon and January
and March will both have two full moons this year.
A few statistics going into Super Bowl L11 are: New England Patriots
have won five Super Bowls. Those are: 2017 against the Atlanta Falcons.
2016 against the Seattle Seahawks. 2005 against the Philadelphia
Eagles. 2004 against the Carolina Panthers. 2002 against the St. Louis
Rams.
New England Quarterbacks: #12 Tom Brady 40 yrs #2
Brian Hoyer 32 yrs
Eagles Quarterbacks: #4 Nick Foles 29 yrs #7 Nate
Sudfeld 24 yrs
Both the Patriots and the Eagles had 28.6 (3rd) YDS
Lastly...maybe it was because it had been 13 years since the Patriots
and the Eagles faced each other in a Super Bowl setting. However it
went...I was attracted and intrigued.
A reported temperature of -1 degree windchill began Super Bowl L11.
Fans in and around US Bank Stadium...Minneapolis, MN...went wild. Maybe
they felt the pull of the full moon.
Touted as "the biggest play of the Super Bowl" - Nick Foles decided to
run Eagles Coach Doug Pederson's manufactured touchdown. In one of the
gutsiest calls in Super Bowl history - the "Philly-Philly" (or "Philly
Special") is introduced.
At the scrimmage line, Foles pretends to change the play. Standing over
his right tackle yelling fake instructions, the ball gets snapped to
Corey Clement - running back. Corey throws it to tight end - Trey
Burton. Burton throws it to Foles in the end zone...who is uncovered.
This touchdown gave the Eagles a 10-point lead at halftime. Phenomena
or Phenomenal?!!
It's being said the Foles made the play call...made the touchdown...and
made history. He also received MVP Super Bowl L11.
After Super Bowl L11 - the Eagles revealed that Press Taylor (quality
control coach) took the "Philly-Philly" from the Bears...who ran it in
2016.
Give the Bears credit for designing the play. Give Taylor credit for
taking the idea. Give Foles credit for suggesting it. Give Pederson
credit for having the guts to use it in the Super Bowl. Give the
players credit for their perfect execution of the play.
So it must be true. Once in a blue moon...or, in this case a blood moon
- things just line up naturally.
Whether the fans knew it or not...13 years of hard work and practice
brought the Eagles to Super Bowl L11. A final score of 41-33 and a Wolf
Moon gave the Eagles something about which to howl. HOWL!!!
Remember the kiddies and our service people. Take good care of the
furry and feathered ones out there. Be safe and healthy. See ya next
time. Ever Toodles!! MONA
