Mind, Body, Soul
Oh, Those
Feelings!!
By Mona Lease
Greetings, Gals!! The following is a column - in no particular order -
of ideas and feelings. Having just spoken to a girlfriend of some
40-odd years - about "feelings" - I submit the following
for you to consider. Remember...all feelings are valid. It's what we do
after the feelings appear that matters.
By the way, readers...we're still on track!! The poses I gave you for
relaxation and breathing last fall...are the beginnings of Yoga.
Frequent commercials are appearing on TV for Yoga classes to help one
de-stress, limber up,...to generally feel better.
"You didn't love her. You just didn't want to be alone. Or, or maybe
she was just good for your ego. Or, or maybe she made you feel better
about your miserable life, but you didn't love her. Because you don't
destroy people you love." - Grey's Anatomy
Eating Habits From Other Countries That Americans Didn't Learn
France - Sugary Breakfasts Are A Non-Non: The first meal of the day is
more hearty and nutritious. They have fewer sugary cereals and add more
fruits to their first meal of the day.
No more emotional eating. The keys are portion control, mindful eating,
and an active lifestyle. Only eat a third of that chocolate bar and
save the rest for another day. Also - keep moving.
Italy - A Study In Contradiction: You might think that pasta is good
for you. Despite how delicious it is - pasta is a carbohydrate. And it
isn't the best thing on which to gorge. Occasional pasta is fine. A
diet rich in it is not a good idea. It contributes to swings in blood
sugar levels.
Japan - Looking As Good As It Tastes: This culture has much smaller
portions of food as compared to other cultures. The Japanese capitalize
on the visual effect of what's being served...color...texture, etc.
Nutritionists recommend a diet of differently colored vegetables.
Ethiopia - The Heartier The Better: If you're a fan of beans and the
like....consider Ethiopia. Their cuisine emphasizes root vegetables,
beans, and lentils. They don't rely heavily on meat. These foods are
high in fiber....which will help you lose weight.
Mexico - Pick The Right Bean: Refried beans are really fried once...in
lard. Black beans are a better choice. Transfats lead to inflammation.
Black beans - rich in fiber...are good for weight loss and to "keep you
regular." A motto from Mexico is: "Breakfast like a king, lunch
like a prince, and dinner like a pauper."
Sweden - Healthy Bread Is A Thing That Exists: Hailed for the fiber it
contains, rye bread is the choice. Whole grains may reduce body weight
and improve blood glucose.
China - Chopsticks Aren't Just For Fun: People eat slower with
chopstick than with knives and forks. In a Japanese study...the eating
rate is associated with obesity.
Greece - Plants Matter: Another part of the "Mediterranian diet" - it
is comprised heavily of plants...not just vegetables but, fruits and
legumes, too.
How To Handle Stress In A Healthier Way
1)Get to know your stressors: Make a list in a journal of all of the
things that stress you. You might not be able to cut out everything
entirely. Knowing they exist enables you to have a heightened awareness
of them.
2)Cover the basics: Get enough sleep. Eat healthy. Drink lots of water.
Keep up the routine that helps you feel your best.
3)Add in a new habit: You could add a 20-minute walk if you like to do
that type of thing. Add something that feels good to you. Variety
encourages the mind to be more alert and tends to facilitate right
brain/left brain coordination.
4)Create community: A sister, a friend, anyone with whom you are
confortable...is good for you to turn to when you need to talk or need
support.
"I no longer look for the good in people. I search for the
real...because while good is often dressed in fake clothing, real is
naked and proud...no matter the scars." - Chrishala Lishomowa
"Sometimes all you need is for someone to just be there, even if they
can't solve your problems. Just knowing there is someone who cares can
make all the difference." - sun.gazing.com
