Along Life’s Way
Coming Out: A Fable
© 2018 Lois E. Wilson

The parents had recently seen a change in their son. He had different companions and was away from home more. He asked for time alone with them as he had something important he wanted to tell them. They thought they knew what he was going to disclose, but they were liberal in philosophy and were ready to accept him and love him no matter what.

They sat across from him at the kitchen table. His mother had prepared coffee hoping that it would help ease the situation. As they sipped, they noticed their son’s discomfort. They reassured him that they were always there for him.

He cleared his throat and said, “You both know I’ve had it rough since I graduated from college. I’ve had to live at home longer than we all wanted. I looked and looked for a position to fit my goals and qualifications—but to no avail. I was really depressed.”

“Yes, we know, son. It has been tough for you,” his father consoled.

The son nodded in agreement. “I know how hard it is for both of you to hear this, but I must be true to myself. A new world has opened up to me. I have been hired for a great position at an up-and-coming company. It is a dream job. I’ll get to use all my education and talents. I’ve leased an apartment and will be moving to it soon.”

His mother said, “That’s wonderful; we’re happy for you!” His father added, “This is all good news. Why all the drama about telling us? What’s the problem?”

The son took a sip of coffee and replied, “Well, Mom and Dad, I know your political viewpoint. Through all my trials and struggles, I have been learning about myself. After watching things develop the last year or so, the growing economy, and for many other reasons—I know how much this will hurt you both but I must tell you—I am a conservative and proud of it!”

The shocked parents looked at each other and loudly exclaimed, “A conservative! How could you do this to us? How soon will you be moving? We hope it’s very soon!” They put down their coffee cups and abruptly exited the room.

He heard his mother sobbing, “A conservative? Can you believe it? Where did we go wrong? What will our friends think?”

Moral: When one receives a wake-up call, others may choose to ignore the alarm because they intend to sleep in.
