Along Life’s Way
Who Is Lew? A Puzzle/Fable
© 2018 Lois E. Wilson
The question, “Who is Lew?” is a puzzlement. To help you find the
answer, here are the things I know about Lew: Through the years, she
has always been there for me. We have shared experiences and dreams.
Initially, she was an ordinary child. She liked to play the childhood
games popular in her generation. She enjoyed school and went to college
and earned two degrees in art and education.
She was and is still fascinated with words—their origin, meaning, use,
appearance and sound. For a time, she combined her knowledge of
language, calligraphy, and design in art projects.
Her exploration includes how words work together in crosswords, and
other types of puzzles. She evaluates how meter, alliteration, and
rhyme sound in verse. She appreciates metaphors, similes, analogies and
homophones. She considers syntax and context, and hopes all of the
above are employed successfully in writing.
Rather than hear her groan when she encounters a pun, she usually
smiles and utters, “That is a good one!” She indulges in wordplay
hoping to elicit a smile or groan.
Her resources are dictionaries, the thesaurus, grammar/style books, and
internet searches. She is always thrilled to find a word not known
before. She applies this Yiddish proverb to it, “Words should be
weighed, not counted.” If it passes the weight test, she might add it
to her vocabulary.
If you are not sure about the answer to the question, “Who is Lew?”
here are two final clues: She admits to being somewhat a
teacher/preacher writer. It is fabled that she occasionally uses
acronyms in her writing. Did you get the answer now? You did? Good! As
the My Pillow guy says, “I knew you would.”
Moral: Use words carefully; avoid weasel words and fighting words. And
pray that you never have to eat your words. Upon my word—that’s it!
